Oh Snap, sub 3 second CTS-V! Bye bye M5

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/09/2...56-horsepower/

from Autoblog
2009 Cadillac CTS-V will officially make 556 horsepower

We thought Bentley's announcement earlier today that it's adding a Speed model to the Continental Flying Spur lineup was exciting news for sedan fans. After all, a 600bhp saloon that can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and reach 200 MPH is pretty exciting, no? Not really when compared to Cadillac's news that the 2009 CTS-V will officially be rated at 556 horsepower, hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 12 seconds flat. No offense to Bentley, but a sub-3-second sedan is about as exciting as it can get on a Monday. For the record, the Edmunds' Straightline Blog reports that the sport sedan's 6.2L supercharged V8 will produce 556 hp at 6,100 rpm and 551 pound-feet of torque at 3,800 rpm. That engine is the LSA, derived from the new Corvette ZR1's LS9 motor and detuned for duty in the CTS-V. Fortunately, the LSA wasn't detuned too much and the '09 CTS-V should destroy its German competition, specifically the BMW M5 with its - can't believe we're saying this - relatively meager 500-hp 5.0L V10.

Dont you mean a sub 4 second car? Anyhow, 556hp/551lbs is going to be bad news for the M5. The new M5 might match the HP but not the torque unless they go FI

well I thought sub would indicate, close as in a sub-10 second car would be something in the 10s for the quarter mile, I wouldn't say Sub 11seconds if it's under 11 seconds

Yeah, and SUBmarines don't actually go below the water, real close but still above surface.

lol, I can't tell if you're arguing against my point or for it.

But anyhow, I think these beasts are whooping up on the worlds' cars for dollar/performance ratio:

GTR
ZR1 - well this one is going to be a bit pricey
Z06
CTS-V

probably a few others, but these are the main ones that come to mind

+100000 The author means "sub 4 second."

Still, that doesn't take anything away from the fact that this is un-freakin-believable! Holy crap, cars are getting quick these days.

Ever drive a CTS? You'll come running back to your BMW. Forget the HP.

No kidding, but the car should get close to 20mpg on the highway. Its not great, but its about the same gas mileage as a 335.

Yes, the LSX has more HP, and a lot more torque.

But, the S85B30 is quite well balanced (in terms of delivery). The torque level is sufficient for daily driving, while the power curve is perfect for the track. I don't really see the LSX as having these qualities.

And, don't superchargers typically overheat during track usage?

I think that if BMW wants to make the M5 quicker, they should do it through other aspects of performance, and not through brute power.

I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure that the ZR-1 is not going to overheat and if rumors that the engine and SC are the same, i'd expect the same out the CTSV

Impressive numbers for a 4 door midsize, but I still think cadillacs are dead ugly. Can't say too much for the current M5 either though. Chris Bangle sure made a mess of everything. Only current bmw's that are good looking IMHO are the E92 and the Z4MC. God I hope they move towards the CS concept.

It would be hard for the M-Brand to switch to forced induction. They have built their image on high winding rev happy engines. It would be nice for them to include a light weight, high revving, twin-turbo V-8 in their line up. Maybe the marketing can people can use BMW Motorsport's 80's F1 engines to legitimize the heritage of the engine.

@ a sub 10 second car doesn't mean under 10 seconds. You guys crack me up. You must know all those Civic drivers. "YEAH MAN! MY CAR IS SUB 10 SECOND! And by that I mean it's close... it runs 17s."

Anyway, screw the sedan. The new CTS coupe is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

But as stated before, It's still going to ride like a Cadillac and not a BMW.

My 335i gets 17mpg City / 25mpg Hwy. and ~ 20mpg mixed. Anyways, obviously with a slightly detuned 'Vette ZR1 engine, the Caddy CTS-V will be extremely powerful and fast, but I bet it will be expensive and won't be a big seller.

This car won't go past 132mph top speed. It always breaks down before it gets that far.... POS Car, not even in the same league as an ///M Car.
