Water Pump Recall: Park Your BMW Outside
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com PER: https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2...call-bmw.shtml May 4, 2018 — BMW is recommending owners of nearly 48,000 vehicles should park their vehicles outdoors until the electric auxiliary water pumps are replaced. The pumps can fail and cause the circuit boards to overheat and catch fire, a problem BMW has been trying to fix since a 2011 recall of 32,000 vehicles and a January 2012 recall of 90,000 vehicles. The recalled vehicles include these 2011 and 2012 models. • 2011-2012 BMW 550i • 2011-2012 BMW 550i xDrive • 2011-2012 BMW 550i Gran Turismo • 2011-2012 BMW 550i Gran Turismo xDrive • 2011-2012 BMW 750i • 2011-2012 BMW 750Li • 2011-2012 BMW 750i xDrive • 2011-2012 BMW 750Li xDrive • 2011-2012 BMW 760Li • 2011-2012 BMW X5 xDrive50i • 2011-2012 BMW X5 M • 2011-2012 BMW X6 xDrive50i • 2011-2012 BMW X6 M • 2011-2012 BMW ActiveHybrid7 • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S Convertible • 2011-2012 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S Countryman • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S, JCW • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S Clubman • 2011-2012 MINI JCW Clubman • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S Roadster • 2011-2012 MINI JCW Roadster • 2011-2012 MINI Cooper S Coupe • 2011-2012 MINI JCW Coupe • 2011-2012 Rolls-Royce Ghost • 2011 BMW X6 Hybrid • 2012 BMW 650i Coupe • 2012 BMW 650i xDrive Coupe • 2012 BMW 650i Convertible • 2012 BMW 650i xDrive Convertible Although recalls were issued in 2011 and 2012, BMW received a report in October 2017 about a 2011 MINI Cooper S that suffered from a failed electric auxiliary water pump, causing engineers to review field data. Another report arrived in December 2017 when a pump failed on a 2011 550i xDrive, a vehicle that hadn't been recalled previously. BMW concluded the newly designed electric auxiliary water pumps supplied by Pierburg were exhibiting similar failures to the water pumps that were previously recalled even though the pump design had changed. Affected owners who have paid to replace the auxiliary water pumps should ask BMW about reimbursement. BMW dealers will replace the water pumps when the recall begins, but the automaker doesn't have replacement water pumps and doesn't know when the recall will get off the ground. Owners will be notified in June 2018 about the recall and will receive second notices when replacement pumps are available. Until then, park away from anything flammable. Owners may contact BMW at 800-525-7417, MINI at 866-825-1525 or Rolls-Royce at 877-877-3735. |

LOL, BMW continues to amaze.
"You know that $60k+ car of yours that you probably pride yourself on? Yeah you're gonna want to park that outside in the rain, sleet, snow, hail, and pollen. Why? Oh uh.... yeah it might just catch on fire randomly. Oh, for how long? We dunno. Probably years if its anything like our other recalls. Make sure to check out our new front wheel drive models though!"

Pffft that's not as bad as the VW Group's Bentley brand, and Bentley does not recall or seem to give a $h*t about their customers (even those who have had TWO Bentley cars).
Buy a Bentley GTC and you had better garage it. In fact don't even drive it during hot weather! Hot weather could mean the rear window will simply fall out of the convertible top. Hot weather may also cause an air hose to melt above the transmission, a common issue, and that is a $5000 engine-out fix (new top to fix glass window is only $17,000). No recalls tho from Bentley. BMW offers recalls so i'd be happy. The VW Group's Bentley brand, they just don't seem to care at all.

Damn!! On the E9x cars the water pump would just go to shit after like 20k miles. I guess BMW remedied that problem by designing one that just says fuck it and sets itself on fire. |

Its funny until it isn't. My neighbour had an unrelated car fire even while parked outside. Nothing like staring in the face of what your house would look like after a car fire while the car you own is under recall for potential fire. |

Received the notice last night and managed to get my X5M for the repair today... seems there is an additional "BMW" approval process that takes place before the repair can happen... luckily this occurred same day but dealership was hesitant.

Shit, now if they could do a recall on the A/C system, my E90 is blowing cool air on the passenger side while the driver side only gets ambient temp air. It's probably the same schrader valve too.

Im confused.. How hard is it for BMW to make a damn reliable eletric powered hot water pump. They have heat circulator pumps in houses that last 20 years and the only reason people replace them usually is because of a small leak or a noisy pump...
Is BMW really going to let their quality control level get this low to have failures on parts that just make these cars unreliable for no reason. Is it because theyre cutting cost and continuing to outsource part production to different countries to improve their bottom-line by that little amount.. Do they not think that this reputation is bad for keeping a consistent customer base. BMW get your shit together... DAMN!!! |

Maybe they should've tried lighting incense in the cars as a form of pray like the recent f90 owner in China did

This is of course very unfortunate.
The truth in automotive manufacturing: shift a greater number of completely assembled and TESTED (that's where the problem is) to supplier. This approach saves money, especially labor required to assemble the vehicle. Instead of steering motor, rack, and steering wheel delivered separately by multiple suppliers, Tier 1 suppler delivers a fully assembled steering rack to the manufacturer. Pierburg is a division within https://www.rheinmetall-automotive.c...coolant-pumps/ The root cause lies in 2 separate parts: - BMW relaying component specifications to Pierburg AND specific testing procedures - Pierburg performing these tests for BMW It's doubtful that extensive testing has been done to simulate a range of problems for this specific water pump. The risk of common problems is typically eliminated by good collaborative design techniques ... until these design techniques miss a few things. Component failure testing is expensive (because it often involves creating a test with multiple components working together), time consuming, and for a relatively inexpensive component it's rarely done. To echo prior comment about Bentley problems, hot weather testing would easily reveal the problem of rear window falling out of the convertible top. Many car manufacturers do perform hot weather testing in Arizona. But - did the tests include "leave it in the Scottsdale parking lot for a few days" scenario? To be somewhat fair BMWUSA and BMW Worldwide promptly responded to my drama Kween tweets this morning and I've since been contacted by phone and email by quite a few ppl. They've escalated my case because I'm certain my 550i X-Drive is also leaking fuel. Idk if this'll speed up a remedy for the water pump issue but it was worth a shot.

Looks like I"ll be taking in my 2012 Rolls-Royce Ghost in to get this fixed. Rather, my chauffer will be doing it.
On second thought, I don't mind if he drives me to the dealership. AT the RR dealership, they roll out the red carpet and hand me a glass of Dom when I arrive. Then as they work on the car, I help myself to some goose liver pate with caviar. Then after hitting the dealership sauna, the barista will make my favorite cup of roasted Italian triple espresso with a touch of saffron. If y'all haven't tried saffron in your coffee, it's to die for! By this time, the SA will let me know if the car will be there overnight, and if it's an extended fix, such as this issue here, they uber me a helicopter to take me to the Ritz Carlton for the night.

I’m lucky if I get a cup of machine coffee without some green and black moldy stuff. While not quite as delicious as saffron, it does provide a nice earthy flavor. Checked the VIN on both my BMW’s and no recalls showing. |

This is kinda funny because every time a Tesla or other EV catches fire, people act like EVs are dangerous and excessively prone to burning.
What most people don't realize is that TENS OF THOUSANDS of ICE cars catch fire and burn every single year in the US alone. But you don't hear that perspective.
