Going to NYC on Friday evening, leaving Sunday morning. This is the only time I can squeeze in a trip unfortunately. Staying a block from Times Square.

First of all, what is the fastest and/or cheapest way to get from Newark airport to Times Square?

Secondly, what should I do with the couple hours I have Friday night and the entire day Saturday? I'm thinking of hanging around 5th ave. mostly...Rockefeller, Grand Central Station, shopping, etc.

The 9/11 memorial is on my bucket list but seems too far if I just have a day. Maybe in my next visit.

I really want the best pizza and desserts in the area so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Don't miss the 9/11 Memorial. Trust me. Take part of your Saturday and hop a train/grab an Uber down to Lower Manhattan. The museum could take up hours of your time (it did for me and my friends), but you should at least go to Ground Zero if you're in the city.

Not sure what your tolerance for unusual theater is, but I'd highly recommend you catch a late show of Sleep No More at the McKittrick Hotel on Friday or Saturday night. I can't really describe it to you in words except to say it's like walking through a dream. If you Google it, don't read more than superficial descriptions, learning too much could spoil the experience. There is also a new dinner show at the McKittrick called The Lost Supper, which has been extended several times due to popularity. I've not had the pleasure of this one, but if it's anything close to SNM, I'd attend in a heartbeat.

There’s honestly so much to do but if you have never been before I would highly recommend going to the top of the Empire State Building. The view is incredible.

Regarding pizza, there’s so many good places but some on the best pizza in the city is Johns pizzeria. There are a few, the one I remember is in Times Square on 44th and 8th ave, between 7th and 8th. Another awesome spot is downtown, place is famous and has been there forever. It’s joes pizza, on Carmine st. So if you do the WTC you can hit that spot on your way back to Times Square.

If you want fine dining the choices are limitless but if you like meat, I have the place for you. It’s called Plataforma and it’s a Brazilian steakhouse....it’s one of those places where they cut the meat for you right onto your plate and have all different types of stuff. Literally worth every penny and it’s a 5 star place that’s all you can eat. It’s on 53rd between 8th and 9th I believe. If you go you will not regret that decision lol. If you want to go to a fine steakhouse/seafood restaurant, I would recommend Uncle Jacks Steakhouse located on 56th st between 5th and 6th.

Also if you have nice weather, you can go for a walk on the westisde by the high line. Some great views of the Hudson and it’s just a niceness place to enjoy the afternoon.

Like I said your options are limitless but some of the above would make it a trip to remember. Have fun!

The best Italian bakery is Ferrara on Grand Street in Little Italy. If you want some of the best Italian food with old Italian waiters and atmosphere, go to Il Mulino in the downtown area on West Third Street. Stay away from Times Square. Waste of time.

You can head down to the South Street Seaport. Great area with good food, bars, and great views. They just finished building a huge deck over looking the Brooklyn Bridge.

The 9/11 memorial is only a 10 minute subway ride from Times Square, don’t miss it!

Make sure you go up Rockefeller or Empire State on the Friday night.

I really liked the pizza from Little Italy, I think it was called . There was one near Empire State and one near Madison Square, plenty all over the city as well.

We had a beautiful meal at Gramercy Tavern, recommend it to anyone.

There certainly is plenty to do!

I can suggest 3 things....

1. If you like comedy check out Caroline’s, it’s right in Times Square and always have great comics.
2. Grays Papaya. They are all over the city and are a NYC staple. Awesome hot dogs!
3. Venieros Italian Pastry....simply the best period!!!!! Worth going to from anywhere in the city for a Canoli and Espresso!!!!!

Theres an airport shuttle bus which would drop you of at 42nd street. Quite cheap and good to go.

I can't agree with this more. I was born and raised in NY and never did the tourist stuff until I had people visit from out of town. I was blown away by the view. This is a must do. Have a blast.

Los Tacos #1 in Chelsea Market (14th street on the West Side). I'm from Queens and can get real Mex-street food in Corona, but I can never say no to Los Tacos #1. Carne Asada Quesadilla!

Emporio (Soho) if a great spot in Soho if you're feeling some modern Italian food without the whole white table setting atmosphere (and especially not the tourist italian places closer to Chinatown).

Soho - great for shopping / people watching
the Highline - good views if you're not going to walk along the West Side Highway. Two for One deal here since you can go to Los Tacos after!
Lower East Side - great Friday night spot for bar hopping.

If you want to keep it local Friday night and not venture too far out for food and drinks walk over to Hell's Kitchen. Lots of great dinner and bar options (I'd Yelp this, Hell's Kitchen isn't my area of expertise - but I'll ALWAYS recommend Pio Pio because I love the Peruvian chicken and the green sauce they serve). Then after you're done you can enjoy times square without the same amount of tourists it amasses during the day.

Sounds like working your way down Manhattan would be the best bet here so my suggestion would look like this:
32nd real quick for your morning bagel with lox spread or lox slices at Best Bagel & Coffee
34th for the Top of the Rock
Depending how you're feeling for lunch you can explore Flatiron (23rd street) but there isn't much. I would argue you could spend more time walking the entirety of 14th across Manhattan (again Highline, Chelsea Market, Los Tacos, Union Square)
Few blocks down is going to get into West Village / Soho area, but I would take people's suggestions and visit the Memorial.
Depending on time you have afterwards, you can some good cheap meals in Chinatown (Big Wong, Noodletown)
Walk over to St. Marks for some pregaming, and work your way over to Lower East Side for barhopping.

Unfortunately the best pizza is in Brooklyn & Queens but most pizza spots in the city are decent.
One day is not much but as people mentioned def visit the freedom tower but if times limited at least check out the empire state building observation deck.
Plenty of rooftop lounges at night to get some drinks and great views. Press lounge(west side), 230 fifth(midtown), Mr. purple(downtown)
Can also bar hope if you walk around LES(lower east side) or by McDougal st area.
If you're into street food I highly recommend halal guys on 53st and 6th. Always a line at nights. Killer late night munchies after drinking.

Best way to have fun in NYC? Stay another day or 2. To much to see & do in a day.

I would go down to the 9/11 memorial, do that, then maybe buy a rolex on Canal street, then work your way up to the empire state building. Go up, then go take a walk in central park. Maybe grab lunch at Shake shack, if you've never been to one and want a great burger. I also highly recommend the Intrepid Museum.

Just did a 1 day with the wife this weekend... Rain hampered the trip, but in TimesSquare we were ready to rest our feet but didn't want to give up the atmosphere... We stumbled upon the R Lounge, at the Renaissance hotel. Can't get a better birds eye view of Times Square, we only stayed briefly for a drink before a show, but so worth the stop.... Add in $.99 house made chips... Winner.

Before dusk take the Staten Island ferry to Staten Island. It goes right past the Statue of Liberty and has great, GREAT views of lower Manhattan. Sunday morning Dim Sum at the Golden Unicorn in Chinatown (depending on when you have to leave) and you'll be looking at apartments to move in. <G> Don't worry you won't be able to afford any.

If you have never been to "the city" you will be overwhelmed. Buy a day subway pass and get a map. And let us know how it went for you. And don't expect to sleep as when we say the city never sleeps, we mean it.

I was in NYC for 2 days. I stayed at Hyatt in Time Square.

I went to 9/11 Memorial, walked the Brooklyn bridge, Rockefeller center, Grand Central and Central Park.

You should be able to visit all those Friday night and whole Saturday.
