Quit Smoking
How many have done it? How long? Any tips?
I'm a month in, cold turkey from 2 packs a day. I find I still get cravings once and awhile when I'm in certain situations. I smoked heavily on my my commutes to and from work (2 hours total) and after a stressful day at work. Talk me off the ledge.

I quit a while back. It was easier than I thought. Mind you I only smoked maybe 10 cigarettes a day. A friend recommended a book. Best $15 I ever spent. I read the last page and never even had the urge to have a cigarette. I don't know how it does it but it worked. Good luck.

quit a few years back. Two things really helped push through cravings. Chug a bottle of water, or work out.
As more time goes on it gets easier and easier. Cravings still hit me every once in a while... just ignore it for 30 seconds and its gone. Truck on man, you wont believe how much energy you suddenly get! |

Quit 20 years ago after smoking since I was 15. Cold turkey and never looked back. Find something to replace cigarettes when you get the cravings. I chewed a lot of gum which helped... Hang in there!!

I bought a vape and quit cigs. Then I quit the vape a while later.
I will still bum a smoke when I’m out drinking but I haven’t bought a pack in forever. A couple of cigs a month is no big deal, probably no worse than all the pollution you are exposed to if you live in a large city. |

Wait til you don't feel well on a trip to EU and smoke a carton of unfiltered Gitanne over the course of a week. Then stop cold turkey and never look back.
A year later I still can't stand the sight or smell of a cigarette.

I switched to vaping 5 years ago. I never intended to quit nicotine in the first place, but I found that switching required the same mindset as quitting. You have to be ready to switch/quit no matter what method you use, otherwise it won't stick. Haven't had a cigarette since second week of Nov. 2013. I feel a shit load better, started working out, and love not smelling like an ashtray.

Started smoking around 14, when I used to by loosies, then when I joined the military, a pack would last me about 2 days. Started to curb the habit by lowering it to 2 a day, then quit after doing that for about a year. In 2013, I stopped buying cigs altogether and using regular old 5 gum anytime the urge hit, which was usually just out of my habitual routine more than anything else. The gum helped tremendously, and I still use it whenever I'm around a smoker for any extended period of time because the temptation is there. The taste of the gum immediately kills the urge and it's an inexpensive way to take your mind off the habit of smoking without changing your entire daily routine.

I smoked from age 14 to age 35. Quite 6 years ago. No real cravings anymore. Chewing gum helped me immensely.
For those situations, such as at a bar having a beer, whilst now I no longer have any cravings, back when I just quit - I would usually snack on some bar nuts, etc. That seemed to do the trick. |

I quit smoking only when I realized that it does not bring me pleasure. For the guarantee - read the book of Allen Carr too))
The biggest surprise was then - there really is no physiological attachment. So quitting smoking is really easy. But be prepared to take excess weight at once )) |

I quit many years ago, probably near 10 years now. One day I just didn't want to smoke and it felt disgusting when I tried. Few days later I quit and haven't smoked ever since. Best thing I have done in my life lol
PS. I started smoking at about 16-17, smoked all the way through college and many years after. I never felt that I am addicted, except when I drank alcohol, that's when I could smoke like one after another. I still didn't smoke at work and didn't really like smoking in car either Last edited by Kolyan2k; 08-24-2018 at 06:38 AM.. |

Congrats to everybody here.
I'm in the medical field and can tell you from personal experience, smoking f*cks up EVERY system of your body. It's deleterious effects cannot be understated. With that being said, it's never too late to quit! It will always be beneficial to ditch it no matter how many years you've been puffing. Personally, never tried it, although I'm down for a good cigar every few months. |

If you haven't started don't. If you haven't quit, do it now!! You owe it to yourself and everyone that loves you.

I quit over two years ago from around 1 and a half boxes a day.
Like someone has already said, I replaced it with Gum and or soft mints for a short bit. and then found a reason to quit. Mine was to not have the new car I had bought smell like smoke so that stopped my commute problem. I'm also OCD though, and I can stand my hands smelling like anything. So I used to wash my hands 3-4 times after each smoke. So not smoking helped with that too. I must say though that even now I still may get a urge or craving... As long as you push through the cravings, and realize that your not attached to it, its actually easy. |

Had smoked over 28 years and stopped overnight, thats now more than 13 years ago. Dont regret it but sometimes miss it, psycho moments (e.g. coffee talk, beer w/friends and so on). Wasnt hard as expected but this is like a longer dry drinker: You would never be entirely free of temptation.
If you are into your head not 100% convinced to stop you wouldnt make it, just forcing yourself to stop had at me a vice versa effect and at my first attempt I was smoking after that more than before. Vapors are trash and less than an easier substitute, you're cheating yourself. Anyway, you're on the right way, keep going

That being said, and a few other half e mentioned it as well, it's the habit of smoking which seemed to difficult to fight, not necessarily the physiological need to smoke. The gum won't be as effective to kill the urge in the bar situation as it would be in a more daily routine situation, so the best bet is to limit the bar hopping for a short time and just drink at home or at a friend's house who doesn't smoke. That way, you can avoid the environment that encourages smoking and save a bit more cash as well.

smoked from age 16 to 38. I quit cold turkey the day my daughter was born but it wasnt easy. Its a habit. Probably the after dinner smoke was the hardest time so i started chewing gum after dinner. that helped and here i am 2 years later, it really doesn't bother me anymore.

Here's a tip:
if you stumble and have one, don't give up thinking you'll try again later. Pretend it never happened and continue to go cold turkey. It doesn't set you back as much as you think. I threw away a new pack after having one twice before I never bought a pack again. |
