Is it possible to drop data plan from Iphone 3g?
So as you all know, you have to sign up for the rediculous $30 a month data plan with the new I-phone. One guy told me you could drop the plan immediately after buying it....another told me no. So, which is it?
It may sound silly to you, but I really dont need to get on the web that bad. I spend ALL DAY on the computer as it is. |

Why the hell would you buy an iPhone if you don't want a data plan? If all you want to do is make calls you bought the wrong phone.

M3to335, I was wondering the same thing.
My wife and I are planning on getting one each. . She doesn't plan to use the data plan, she just wants an Ipod that makes calls, takes pics, has a calendar and can sync to her cars bluetooth. |

Then look for the original iPhone as those I believe had the option of canceling the data plan. I know you can't get the lower rate if you don't live in a 3G area, but not sure about canceling the data plan entirely for the iPhone 3G.

As an alternative, if you're computer inclined, you can hack the iPhone and use any SIM you want, so you won't need a data plan at all. Most of the software that enables you to unlock an iPhone is for the last generation though. Just Google "hacking iphone," there's plenty of info on the intrawebs about it.

Yeah, shrug, I don't have an iPhone, so I have no idea what constraints you're under with regards to their contract.

The data plan is really vauge and I havent seen anything in writing which which says you HAVE to keep it. Yet they "tell" you that you do. That bugs me. $30/mo + tax for a data plan that I will hardly ever use seems retarded.
In regards to your other responses. I dont want a used first gen. I guess I'll just keep my Cingular 8125 for now |

My understanding is that the data plan is packaged into the 2 yr ball and chain. I'm choosing to wait for when the new iPhones are sold unlocked. There's still plenty of life in my unlocked aluminum-back unit.

They're not going to be sold unlocked. But, they will be sold without a contract at $599/$699 eventually.

You can not have the iPhone 3G without the data plan. It makes no sense whatsoever to have an iPhone without data anyways, all of the widgets utilize the internet to refresh their data. If you want an iPhone without internet get yourself an itouch.

That's how AT&T is making up the money on the discounted phones.

I am not sure how they are doing it in US, but in Canada it is possible to get a iPhone with out a data plan. However you will pay more for the phone (Not $199 or the $299).
Here if you get a iPhone with data package and if you cancel the data package with in the 3 yr period you are subject to a penalty. I am not sure how much it is. I know it is in my contract I didn't bother to read it. I understand your justification of not wanting the data package (I work in IT and I have internet access all the time.) However it is a smart phone and if you are not going to use the functions then there is no point of getting one. (Email, Stock quotes, weather ...etc). Also there is one thing to keep in mind the phone it self is enabled for data so even if you don't have a data plan if you use any one the applications which uses the data it will automatically use data and you will be billed on a 'Pay as you go' term. As for wi-fi yes the phone will use the wi-fi network if one available for the data that will not be considered as data usage on the plan. |

Yes, you can get it without a data plan. All that is required is a 2-year contract.

There are a lot of things you can do with the iphone without 3G or EDGE. If you get the programs downlaoded while on WiFi connections it is close to the same.
Personally I wouldn't want an iPhone without the data plan, I would go for something much smaller and sleek if I couldn't use google maps or surf the internet whenever I wanted to.
