I have been looking at that one and another model they have, both with stainless tops. My current bench is a wood top, gets beat up, I sand and refinish every few years, no biggie. I would be curious to hear how bad that stainless scratches. I know its a workbench and doesn't really matter but still would like to hear how that top holds up.

I bought my tool box off Craigslist - unfortunately a lot of mechanics overextend and need to sell some great equipment.

I like the look of the metal top, but wouldn’t like it for electrical (soldering) work or clean up/scratching. Prefer wood and occasional refinishing or replacement if it gets real bad. I also like mounting a vise, not sure this item would be good for that.

Rethinking that metal top - I do mostly car stuff and wood work. Maybe if I welded or did more metal fab I’d prefer the metal top?

I don't have this one, but I want it now. I tend to go with wood top anything for my work space, but I do no form of metal work/fabricating. That stainless top will get scratched and beat up from just general use. If you plan to use it a lot, it will only be beat up even more. Another reason I tend to go with wood, it can be sanded down and cleaned up. Depending on what grade of stainless it is, will also determine shear modulus and chemical resistance. Oddly, the description doesn't give details on what grade of stainless steel it is. In my experience, generally stainless on tool boxes, such as this, are usually 304 (but not always). It will scratch up pretty easily, but it will be corrosion resistant. Something else that caught my eye on this one, is the casters. I buy a lot of tools and tool boxes for work; I always look at the casters and the how the connections for the casters are made. All too often manufacturers of tool boxes spend their budget on trying to create an awesome tool box, but drop the ball on the casters. The majority of the tool boxes I am currently replacing, no longer have the ability to roll. Husky spared no expense on casters on this one.

If you decide to shadow foam, get in touch with me if you need advice or have questions.

Harbor Freight's cheaper line of Yukon boxes and benches are identical to Husky and quite obviously made by the same company. I've never seen a Yukon version of the box in the OP, but I think I paid under $300 for each of the large wood-top benches I purchased from HF recently, with coupon.

Whoa, this is good to know. Any notable differences at all besides the badge? Soft close drawers, etc...?

Have this exact same toolbox but Husky branded. Had it for a few years now and seems to have held up pretty well.

Seems expensive for what it is. I bought a 52" craftsman roller, box top and bottom cabinet for $780 about 2 years ago. Far more storage than that Husky. Soft-close drawers. Good quality for the price. Top box has electric outlets for battery charging and two USB.

What I don't get is the need for 6 casters. No garage floor is perfectly level, I can see that 6-wheel box high-siding on the center casters and wobbling every time you open it.

My 2 cents.

It has all that. Seems identical.

I have one of these, too. Use it for my compound miter saw. Even cheaper:

Bought it.

My garage floor is all busted up, so I'm sure the box will teeter-totter. But I can remove wheels should I need to.
I made the associate at HD take the cables off a few tools so I could check how well they fit. I have Ridgid brand stuff (bought on a BF deal). It fits very nicely from the impacts and drill I tried.

The backing where the holder is is pegboard. I didn't catch that in the pictures. This could be really handy for hanging spare cutoff wheels, my little drill bit container and a few other odds and ends.
I also didn't catch that where the batter charger is in the picture is a little raised platform. You can't get under it, dead space. But that platform is just 4 little rivets. Should be easy enough to drill them out should I want to.

I also think I'll try to put some rivnuts in the top for things like a little holding vise or a 3rd hand for soldering. The top isn't thick enough for a heavy vise for beating things.

Once I get it unpacked and loaded with tools I'll know if it's right for me or not.

And I was totally ready to buy a HF box. Was at the store and had tag in hand. But it hinged on them approving me for their credit card. The 10% on top of the discount coupon, yes please.
They denied me. Say they'll get back to me with why, by mail I'm assuming.

Home Depot approved me for $6k on the spot. Only $50 off but it's still something.

760 credit and very very low debt/income ratio.

Did you do Husky across the board? How do you like them? As much as I would love to throw down for some Wera or SK, I'm just working on my stuff in the garage...not trying to make a career out of this. You pick out a mechanics kit or something?

I've broken a few, lost some...just tired of the mismatched kit. Looking for some good wrench sets and probably a 1/4" and 3/8" ratchet to start out. Ready to get things organized just like you've got! Going to get a box, too. Have an old Snap On, but it's pretty small and I'll use it for the specialty tools.

i did not go Husky across the board. i do have some old craftman wrenches and sockets but i'm missing quite a few of each. so when i picked these up like i mentioned i'm not a full time mechanic and these tools have done the job! and i don't mean little jobs i mean full on 9" lift suspensions on my truck and my BMW! it got the job done. i can see if you were a full time mechanic than i would maybe invest in some quality tools but from watching a lot of Mechanic Youtuber's reviewing tools seems like a lot of them have accepted using a wide variety of tools not called "SNAP ON" some of them even praise a couple of Harbor Freight tools.

these i picked up at the Home Depot tool center and they are kits. actually picked up a lot of tools while i was at it lol

but like you mentioned getting these organized helps big time so i did get some components to help with that

not to hijack this thread lol but i renovated the whole garage including a full garage cabinet system to organize all my tools and what not as well as RaceDeck flooring

anyways good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Snap on for life!!!

Lol for a garage setup/weekend warrior I think that box would be more than adequate. Biggest thing to look for is expandability/modularity. You dont want it busting at the seems and then having to buy a bigger one when you couldve bought a top chest or a locker.

I hear good things about Harbor Freights US General Boxes. They even have their new brand 'Icon' which is supposedly higher end. Id start with HF.

Home Depot had this Husky 46in 9 drawer chest for 288. Veteran's discount eliminated sales tax. It's not quite as deep as the one they sell for 350 but the depth actually perfectly matches my Harbor Freight travel cart so they line up along the wall perfect.

The top is not real wood which may be why cheaper...and it's not solidly attached to the top but I view that as a win win for me personally.

It's not advertised on their site..not sure why but multiple home depots had them in store.

Edit: Dimensions are the exact same as the Harbor Freight one. Seems Husky and Home Depot came up with a design to undercut the Yukon / HF box in a lower price point. I added a HF magnetic Power Strip to complete the package.

I'm just going to use this thread as my general tool thread. It's got me in organization mode.

Anyone aware of a socket tray for 1/2" drive that includes 9mm - 22mm (or higher)? I swear every last one I find starts at 10mm with exception of Westling...but they are way too expensive (CNC machined and engraved trays) and to get to 22mm I would need two separate trays. I just like the simple plastic ones that are "rods" with the size indicated. I've got about 140 sockets between SAE, metric, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 I need to get on. I feel like I've got a good grip on 1/4 and 3/8 sockets, but this stupid little 9mm for 1/2 drive is blowing the deal.

Something like this, but inclusive of 9mm:

I thought this was the ticket, but that damn 9mm

Throw out the 9mm socket. call it a day lol. for something that small you already have the 3/8" and 1/4" drives.

That’s pretty much where I stand. I’ve got my “overflow” bin of random sockets that I was going to toss it in if I can’t find a solution.
