PlastX or ScratchX on a Playstation 3?

Hi everyone,

I recently picked up a refurbished 60GB Playstation 3, and have been quite happy with it thus far. The system runs well, and hasn't skipped a beat through a couple of "endurance runs". However, it appears that the previous owner didn't take very good care of the system from a cosmetic standpoint, so the system case has numerous scratches and mars on it.

This brings me to my question: Has anyone used Meguiar's ScratchX or PlastX on their PS3 before to buff out their scratches? If not, do you have any other recommendations that can help restore the finish of the PS3 to its original condition?

I know this sounds completely O.C.D, but the scuffs and scratches are bugging me. Makes me wonder how messy and unorganized some people really are. I mean, the thing essentially just sits there, playing a BD or DVD. How the hell do you beat up the system like that?!? I still have an original NES that's flawless and runs perfectly fine! That thing's 20+ years old!!!

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

A handful of views, a forum full of car/tech nuts, a bunch of detail gurus, and nobody's tried to use automotive scratch remover on anything else besides a car?

Guess I may have to play guinea pig and try this on my own one day....

Menzerna Final Polish II on a PC at setting 2 followed by Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze followed by Dodo Wax Blue Velvet Hard Wax. Just make sure to cover up the vents from the polishing dust and to tape up the Playstation 3 logo.

You might want to try with a hand polish first as I can't imagine the paint is too thick. If you have a gauge to check paint thickness, do that first.

Ok, so I figured I would follow up with my own topic, after I decided to use my PS3 as the guinea pig. I used Meguire's ScratchX to buff out the various scratches, and then applied a layer of Meguire's NXT 2.0 Tech Wax, for good measure. I decided to just stick to hand polishing, as the Playstation 3 shell is just plastic, and an orbital seemed like overkill.

The results were pretty impressive! Just some light hand polishing with the ScratchX removed virtually all of the scratches and mars that were on the surface of the PS3. The unit actually looked much better with just the polishing alone. The NXT wax wasn't even really necessary, but I figured since I had it around anyways, I'd put on a light layer, if for nothing else but to make dusting easier. The added shine was just a bonus.

Anyways, here are the pictures. They alternate from "Before" to "After". (Sorry about the quality. They came from a cell phone.)

he bought the console second hand, says so in the original post. Awesome job cleaning it up. Better to get scratches on the outside of the console rather than the inside.

Nice, it looks great.

I just laid down some carnauba wax on mine and then sprayed some quick detailer on it after I was done. Mirror finish.

It doesn't look too bad. I think it still needs some polishing to get the scratches out, but the shine and beading is nice.

Lol, thanks for the replies, everyone. Haven't felt the need to put water on my system just yet, but I'll rest easy knowing it'll bead up if I do. Thanks for the demo, Krueger///M3!

But yeah, it took me a while to find a working 60gb PS3 in good condition. The internals of the system (from what I could see through the vents, anyway) were pretty much spotless. Not even dust in the vents. The only flaw with the system was the scratches on the shell, but I figured the internals were more important than the case. Now I just have a case shine to match.

I have the 60GB as well, and my casing is pretty scratched up too. I believe I have some Scratchx, so I DEFINITELY have to try this out. Thanks for the idea!!
