PET OWNERS: what do you do when you have to leave home for weeks?

ok I have a HUGE problem. first time in my life.

My schnauzer might be home alone for 3 weeks. I need to go to Korea, and of course Im not going to ask anyone to take care of my dog for 3 weeks. Thats just too much work and stress.

And of course, Im not going to leave him at home for 3 weeks by himself. Thats a torture. As much as I love my little buddy, I want to figure out a best way for both of us.

I looked into Petsmart PetHotel thing, but there is none in my area(Oregon). Also, I don't even think they'll let the dog stay there for 3 weeks anyway even if I have the money.

Anyone who lives alone with a dog want to share their know-how on how to go away for weeks without worrying about your pet the whole time?

I have approximately 4 weeks to find out a way. I already have the plane ticket and I must go.. "Don't go" is not an option.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLP.

There should be some type of kennel in your area. I usually either take my dog with me via states or leave him with my family or friends when I got to Spain.

a good breeder or dog trainer should be able to recommend a good place or an animal hospital...

Look in your local paper - a pet sitter will take him for you...

Find a good local kennel, check the place out first and make sure its professional, and not some family run operation out of the basement of their house.

When my wife and I go away we leave our dog with my mother-in-law. She thinks of our dog like a grandaughter so it works out well. If there is no family you could leave your dog with, check with your vet. Some vets have nice boarding facilities, but if not they should be able to give you a recommendation.

Find a cage free boarding option. There are many in LA areas which cater to finicky and pampered dogs. The dogs are divided into separate areas based on their breed, size, age and demeanor so they can run and play around with other dogs while being supervised around the clock. Also, make sure they offer private walking services if your dog is used to it. This is the best option, IMO.

This is where we leave my Cocker Spaniel when my family goes out of town. I hope you have something similar around where you are :

great recommandations. I didn't even know such things exist.
Im researching more about kennel and dog motel. Price ain't cheap though. wow.
Anywhere between $500 to $1000 for 3 weeks... I could probably buy a ticket for him. lol.
oh well. as long as he doesn't get to be stuck at home by himself.. I guess its worth it.

anyways, keep them coming guys. thank you all so much.

i personally dont like kennels. i mean you cant trust them. who knows what they do with your dog. either find a good friend to walk the dog or take them with you.

boarding and kennels get expensive really fast too.

If you are planning on taking him with you, you better get on it, the dog would need a number of shots since its going out of the country.

I strongly suggest getting a pet sitter. This will stress the dog out less as they will remain in their own enviroment. The additional perk is that the sitter will basically end up house sitting for you as well (checking mail, etc.). Whenever I travel I use a pet sitter for these reasons not to mention it's alot cheaper than a kennel.

I really dislike kennels because I can't insure that each employee will treat my dogs well. Whereas I can get to know the pet sitter and they usually come with recomendations. Also, kennels are typically cold and impersonal not to mention occassionally hazardous for your dog.

+1, house sitter is the way to go. I usually use a college age daughter of a coworker of mine.

I think you need a girlfriend that likes dogs.

You can always offer a close relative/friend to take care of your dog, just pay them, that's what I do.

Sadly, all my good friends aren't good pet owners. Most of them don't have any experience with pets.
All my family is in Korea or Atlanta.

Sounds like a plan. I will look for a house sitter also.
As far as a girlfriend, I currently live with my girlfriend. We are both crazy with our dog. Thing is, we are going to Korea together.
