F1 2022: Monaco GP - Monte Carlo (May 29)

Leclerc was out of luck last year here even before the race start and is wanting to make amends.
It was also Bottas's bad luck day with a jammed wheel nut sidelining him.

You'd expect (one of) the greatest female tennisplayer of all times to do a better job with those arms....

In the old days they sometimes had a marshall standing on the track waving that flag like crazy.

Looked like the flag was too heavy for the celeb and wanted the wind to do all the work.

Yeah but it's Serena Williams.
They say she's the sister of Venus Williams, but I think she's also the little sister of Mike Tyson with those arms:

The only explanation I can think of is that she was afraid the flag would break
Or monaco cheaped out and it was a look-a-like they hired

My prediction...

Chances are the ferrari's will be very quick in monaco. Lots of slow corners.
My guess it'll be:
1. lec
2. ver
3. sai
4. per
5. rus
6. bot
7. ham
8. nor
9. alo
10. kmag

If all of them finish of course. In Monaco that's a big IF...

edit: switched bot with nor

True, 1996 showed that literally anything can happen in Monaco
What a race was that.

Off the top of my head, without looking it up, was that the race where 4 cars finished?

Perfect sunshine, no single drop of rain, but still 10 DNF in Crash Town (full race: here).

Can't wait for Monaco, let's see if the new cars allow for more action.

Charles already has trouble in Monaco when it’s dry, my confidence in him if it rains is 0. Then comes Azerbaijan where he also crashes in the castle section of sector 2. The WDC might just end with these two races alone

Here's some data from the last gp, it turns out Mercedes really did solve porpoising and their solution was the most effective on the grid. This is onboard data from F1 and it shows Merc has the lowest porpoising forces on the entire grid. I suspected this last week because although you could hear the sounds of porpoising on board (a good example is the George vs max on board), you could not see any suspension movement or bouncing externally. This is key evidence that the amplitude of porpoising is extremely miniscule on the Merc. Very interesting data, let's see if this allows them to further focus on performance now that their main issue is gone.

Leads one to believe there is more time to be gained by the teams still working on porpoising. Ferrari's still have visible bouncing.

George did say they are still suffering from some porpoising in high speed corners, on straights it is all but gone.

There will always be gains when you eliminate design abnormalities from a car, and porpoising is an abnormality. However, the amount of time to be gained will depend on if porpoising was affecting cornering ability - so for redbull there will be little to no gains as they never had issues with porpoising to start, with ferrari they will likely gain straight line speed but probably nothing for cornering. With merc it appeared they gained both (probably a bit more left once the cornering porpoising is eliminated), but need to really lose some weight and add more overall performance before they can really compete.

BTW Killed by Death there are speculations on f1technical from some skilled cfd guys that the w13 is actually alot draggier than the f1-75. I think this largely has to do with the rear tires not being shielded by side pods resulting in a lot of drag, so don't judge a car by its curviness.

Don't they just run with less downforce? So as in more ride height?
I mean, they have high top speed, but their lap times are still off from the top of the field.
That means they're loosing time in corners. Where downforce is king.

They've solved porpoising with the settings and new parts they used. Doesn't mean that they're solved when the car is made faster. Only that last thing counts of course.
Only time will tell I guess, but I think it's probably a very delicate balance. (for all the teams)

I wonder how much budget is still left at MERC.

If they wanted a faster car in a straight line they would have to decrease drag, and the way they would do that is with wing levels. They would never reduce drag via increasing ride height. The venturi tunnels are the most efficent down force generating devices on the car by far, and the trade off between drag reduction and downforce loss is never worth it when messing with the floor via ride height (the trade off would be way too unfavorable). F1 teams would likely run wingless (the original 2022 rules planed on removing the front wings as that would allow the cars to be even less effected by dirty air) before they messed with the floor on these ground effects based cars.

Yeah they still are lacking downforce and the w13 is still overweight. Only parts will fix that now, if they have money left in their budget but they probably should have some money left over since they didn't bring any upgrades so far. Also not sure how much other teams have left but I wish the FIA would do a show and tell with their bank accounts too lol.

No, porpoising was fixed by changing the air flow structures under the car, if you can prevent those nasty characteristics of stalling and suction peaks etc, porposing will be solved under all circumstances. And if you understand the root cause of porpoising then any upgrades to increase down force will account for porpoising and it should never happen again.
