I Think I Chose Wrong College Major...
so spring semester is starting on the 20th starting 2nd semester my sophmore year. i am currently majoring in accounting. as time goes by im seriously thinking about what i really want to do in life and if i am in the right college major.
after graduting college, what do i do on from there? it is really kind of a scary thought for me (first in my family to be in college, others a few years to go), and now that i sit back and look at my remainder vacation im really thinking hard about my major and what to do in life. so my original plan is to major in accounting and get MBA from NYU minimum, i don't see myself going to stanford or anything but NYU is a college i can definatley make for MBA. but what do i do after college, what jobs am i qualified for? are the only things i can do CPA, financial advisor, etc? to be honest i really didn't want to go into accounting. i had interest in it when we had to choose, but now i fee like im lost. like where do i go with accounting? i can't see myself doing financial records, taxes, etc. i was and still am very into computers. now that i thought hard i really think the computer science is the right major for me. i just can't see myself working with accounting/mba, like what do i do? it could just be that i am not very knowledged on what lyes beyond with accounting/mba but for now i just see it as CPA, advisor, taxes, etc with computer science being analysts, programer, etc. the post still may be very vague, and i apologize if it is still hella confused myself . so i did some research and i found some articles that kind of relate to my situation. what i really want to do in life is cars. either import cars to korea, sell exotics, open up a tune shop, etc. now this doesn't come free (i wish it did) and i guess you can say this is where my thinking lyes the most with me saying "if i stick with accounting, can i still acomplish my goals or do i just do taxes, work in a firm, etc?" http://www.youngmoney.com/careers/advice/044 http://www.cvtips.com/career_advice_forum/-vp17747.html http://www.monstertrak.com/career-gu...g/wrong-degree

in terms of ceilings, you get paid way more as an accountant compared to computer science, car sales and prbly opening own shop. So depends if the happiness you buy with the extra cash outweighs the "pain" you have to deal with everything for not doing what you want to do.

Do whatever makes you happy. I'm a junior in college. This past fall semester I determined that I am getting a degree just to have one, not to get a job in a certain field. If being an accountant makes you happy, then do that. If owning your own shop or working around cars makes you happy, then do that. Just finish college so you have a degree to fall back on if you fall on hard times.
Also you have to know your priorities. Are you majoring in accounting because you heard they make a lot of money? |

yea, i am in HS (junior) and still thinking what i want to do in life, i really want to work with cars, like sell them, open up my own dealership or become an automotive engineer. but my mom is pushing me for medicine, which i honestly don't like but its a good paying job. so i think i am going to go my own way and thats what you should do but your in more complicated situation since your ALREADY in college, best of luck to you and hope you make the right choice for your future.

The real world is about who you know, not what you know. The best thing you can do in college is network.

just b/c you have a degree in one field doesn't mean you can only go out there and start a career in that particular field. For example, my cousin graduated from UC Berkeley with a Sociology degree and ended up in IT and networking. I graduated with a business degree (finance) and currently work in the legal field (not a lawer).
It's never too late to change your mind.. esp if you're still in school so I wouldn't worry too much. Sometimes you have to try it out to see if you like it or not. My senior year in college I interned at a brokerage firm thinking I wanted to be financial advisor. After 6 months I felt like that's not what I wanted to do as a career, so I didn't pursue it after graduating. If you are passionate about cars in terms of fixing cars, etc.. then you may want to major in mechanical engineering or look into a vocational school. My friend didn't take his SATs and after high school he went to UTI in socal and then got into the BMW STEP program. After he graduated he became a mechanic for a bmw dealership where he's currently at. He was never into school, but he had a passion for cars up to this day so he ended up doing what he enjoys unlike most people (including myself). You're still young so you have plenty of time to change your mind. Good luck |

Well, if your not happy? Then don't do it. Make sure your all the subjects
you took in the freshman year are not wasted. Would, the subjects you took are pre-requisite to a computer engineering degree? Ask, your counselor. |

The thing about an accounting degree is you can do pretty much anything in business with it. The same can't be said about the other degrees.

exact same reason why I'm doing accounting (I mean i like it though) but I'm a Jr in college and last year i was thinking about changing my major to something more "fun" but one of my good professor convinced me to stay by showing me the opportunities I could have by sticking it out. And your almost guaranteed to get some sort of job once your done. The only down side i see about being a CPA is you need 150 semester hours at least in my state though while most majors only required 120 |

thanks guys for input. so to sum things up:
1. if i stick with accounting, i can still get any job computer based, etc as long as i meet qualifications. so my major doesn't 100% determine my future job. 2. so for the first 4 years of college i shouldn't really put too much thought into what i can do with accounting as i am still open to whatever i want after i graduate. 3. after my 4 years i want go to NYU and get MBA, to recall NYU stern has a 2 year MBA program. even if i get this i can still get any job i want as long as i meet qualifications? 4. i don't want to change to comp sci as i will be losing way too many credits, so that wouldn't make sense to me. my friend is majoring in marketing, how is that field as well? 5. what is the difference between finance and accounting? doesn't accounting cover finance? i know some questions are repetitive, but thanks guys for help.

oh and op don't sweat getting a cpa you get paid almost equally without one. Probably a better chance of getting a job compare to someone who doesn't have one but I know a lot of accounting majors and they don't plan on getting a CPA, like me lol

About accounting,
You can go anywhere. My dad has his degree in accounting and his CPA and he ended up being the VP for one of the largest payphone companies in the country. If you take a look at a lot of CEO's, a good amount have come from accounting firms. Almost all CFO's have. You can even work with computers within accounting. AIS (Accounting Information Systems) is a growing field within accounting and all the major firms have AIS divisions (they each call them something different though). Not to crap on a marketing majors, one of my good friends is one, but you will be competing with much more people. And the pay is crap. My friend told me I'm making more this summer at my internship than he will be making full time his first year out of college. As far as your MBA aspirations, the whole point of an MBA is to get one after you have a few years experience working. It is supposed to show that you cared enough about your education to give up a few years of a salary to pursue further education. I have heard from some people that if you get your MBA right after your undergrad without working it is looked at as being lazy. I don't know how true this is, but that is what I have heard.
