Printer/scanner

My Canon MX922 decided it didn't want to scan anymore. We've had it a while, so I guess it's time for a new one. Any recommendations from the braintrust here?

Laser black & white only unless you really need color.

Unfortunately, I do need color. What about a brand, or they all pretty much the same?

Something with refill bottles instead of cartridges that need to be replaced.

Ours is a Canon and the only issue we have is that there are times where it doesn't get used for awhile and needs an ink flush (regular or deep cleaning is not enought).

We have an HP color laserjet. Uses cartridges. We've had it for a few years, no problems. Hardly use the color feature, though. Next time would probably just get a black & white.

My vote goes out to Lexmark. Haven't had many problems with the CX510de until recently after about 8 to 9 years of service. The issue I'm having is with the automatic document feeder. But I did use the crap out of it. What I liked about the ADF is that when I did scans/faxes, it would do both sides of the paper without me having to manually flip the pages. Mobile support is good too where I could print to it via my mobile devices.

Instead of fixing the printer, I'm going to repurpose it for use at my vacation home as it still prints fine and can scan fine via the use of the flat bed scanner and I'm buying the current CX431adw.

Color laser over anything that uses ink, especially in low-volume settings where ink cartridges dry out between uses.....

Yep. Went color laser and have never gone back. And with the shenanigans being played around with some of the printer manufacturers with forcing you to purchase their specific ink and/or causing some functions of your printer to be disabled due to low ink or "incompatible" ink, no thanks.

I have a couple of Lexmark’s, a colour duplex laser, really good, but big and whilst it came with a 10,000 page black toner and 2,500 for each of the colour’s, the replacement cost is pretty high - nearly £800 to replace all 4.

The second is a duplex print mono laser, with auto document feeder, and to be honest is the one I use the most - mainly for scanning! I have both in my home office, and can’t recall the last time I did a colour print. We used to print photos, but now have a plethora of iPads, phones and computers etc that has negated the need to print.

The best bit with the scanner one is that you can set it up to scan to a folder on your computer (including onedrive) or send via email.

Over the years I have had many HP, Xerox, Samsung, OKI, Epsom etc, and the Lexmark’s are my favourite.

I have an Epson Ecotank that’s worked well for me. You fill the ink when you get it and that was easy and went well. I haven’t used it enough to need to refill yet.

I bought it because I got tired of buying ink cartridges.

We have an HP M478. Looks like the equivalent unit today is the M480. Excellent printer and scanner.

Any of the HP Enterprise MFP models that fit your use case are good. Not cheap.

I think the model really depends on how much you will print and scan. I have had an HP Color LaserJet (duplex printer only - no scan) in my office for many years and it is a great printer. I use a ScanSnap scanner for scanning. Both are great at what they do although I find myself printing and scanning less than 10 years ago.

I also have a LaserJet Pro 148dw wireless monochrome all in one in another room, which is a decent printer but much slower printing and much slower and a little more cumbersome scanning than the ScanSnap. However, it can function as a flatbed scanner, whereas the ScanSnap can’t. I originally had a separate all in one for faxing, but this isn’t even hooked up to a phone line anymore.

Finally, in our vacation condo, I have an HP LaserJet Pro M29w wireless monochrome all in one. It is small enough to fit in a spot out of the way and slow, but sufficient for my needs there.

As other have said, I’d recommend laser over ink jet these days. As you can tell, I like HP. However, I exclusively use genuine HP toner AND HP paper with my printers. For the amount I use, the price premium isn’t that much and I feel like HP products work better, with less chance of a problem, using HP supplies.

So… an HP Color LaserJet with specifications to meet your needs.

I am happy with my HP MFPs. I’ve owned three and they have been trouble free. I have a legal and regular paper tray, and copy/scan works great. Obviously you have to buy ink, but I only print a couple times a month. I think the main printer I’m using now I’ve owned for six years. Does everything I need it to do.

We use HP and Xerox exclusively at work with mixed results (Tech dept for a college campus). I've had great luck with Brother printers for home use for myself and family members/friends.
