Hi Folks,

My valeter is offering to ceramic coat my new G90 on the day of its delivery which shall involve polishing to ‘key’ the paint.

I’m a bit squeamish about it.

RIMs only, perhaps?

I don’t want to do PPF as I’m not sure it’s worth spending €6000 on it.

Any advice?

Paint correction with a quality job of ceramic coating does wonders for keeping the car clean and looking great. It does require up keep to keep the ceramic coating in top shape but washing is easier and the paint will look amazing especially the MBB as I have on my 22 M5C. I will definitely coat the G 90 when it arrives in Feb

Paint correction and ceramic coating is a day one recommendation. It’s a shame, but every new car from every manufacturer arrives at the dealer in need of correction. Ceramic coating is going to keep it cleaner longer and makes getting it clean a lot easier.

Ceramic coating and PPF really serve two different purposes. Ceramic coating is more of a long term wax. Do you plan to daily drive the car? Are you concerned about paint rock chips? PPF will reduce damage to the paint.

Ceramic coating is good to do but i wouldn't rush it for just any detailer. The prep work is the important part because most cars will still require some polishing when new.

It makes washing/drying and maintaining your car WAY easier with ceramic coating on the paint but don't expect it to offer any rock chip or swirl mark protection. Think of it as a wax that can last several years.

Every few months you can apply a renewal spray to the coating. These renewal sprays help to rejuvenate the water repellency of the coating.

What does that have to do with it??? Only Porsche should get ceramic and PPF and why??? Ceramic coating is done to keep the colour and shine of the car at top shape and as other members said, easier to wash and it stays looking clean much longer. PPF at least the hood, side vendors and front bumper, to keep stone chips away so the car keep looking great

Yeah, for an M5 I like to do front end PPF and full ceramic coating on top.

On my Audi R8, I did full body PPF and ceramic.

Semi-daily. Wife has her own car and I have a Honda Odyssey for day-to-day stuff.
I’ll take the G90 when the mood takes me. Which could be often! 🤣

I’m moderately concerned about rock chips or stone chips as we refer to them.

I’m also a realist. Every dime I put into the car is money I’m never seeing again and I have ambition to get a new one every three years. I don’t lease. €6k in coatings & PPF is a straight loss really, is it not?

You would be surprised. A new car actually needs paint correction probably more than at any other point in the car's life. There can be dead paint on a new car, plus various flaws from the shipping process. Not to mention, most car dealerships have terrible detailers working for them. So they can do paint damage in the new car prep.

I always take my new cars to my professional detailer. He does paint correction as needed, and then PPF and ceramic. I actually have my cars transported to him by covered trailer so that I don't get any rock chips before he installs the PPF.

Will you get the full cost back? No.

Will it enhance your enjoyment of the car? Maybe.

I like to have PPF on my cars because it allows me to drive it with less worry of getting rock chips. If I did not have PPF, then every time I'm driving on the highway I would be afraid of cars in front kicking up rocks. With PPF, I just forget about that and drive.

Trading a car every three years, why not just lease? Seems like that would be more of a money loss concern than the PPF cost. I would not PPF a car I only intended to keep short term. My view, do what makes you happy.

It’s a personal car. Therefore, I cannot write-off leasing costs as an expense for tax purposes.
If I run it through as a company car, the benefit-in-kind tax is prohibitively expensive, in my country.
My usual approach is to lay out a 55% deposit and finance balance @3% over 36mo.
This way the vehicle is never in negative equity and I’m financing the portion I’m using (or losing!), as I use it. And the money factor is low.
At 36mo, as warranty expires, I’ll sell vehicle privately and go again. That’s the broad strokes of it.

Do you do the whole car?

As I understand it, there’s a PPF-lite where only high-risk surfaces are done?

Was quoted US$7500 for full PPF for an Audi A4. Seems excessive and obviously G90 will be more.

I hear what you’re saying though. If I thought I was going to keep the car forever, it would be an easy decision.
