So much weight! But so much speed! Good color too. Seems too slow for an M5 tho. Definitely has enough power but seems not enough to offset the weight unfortunately.

I saw the car wow episode where they had the last 3 versions of the M5 (which included this beauty) race against each other, but sadly did not do so well against its former counterpart. Nonetheless, the redesign looks sooo freaking beautiful 😍

ZF needs to drop a new gearbox with a higher power ceiling, should be another version dropping this year or next but probably won't get into the LCI.

I hope that is the case. Maybe a competition and CS model?

I sat in one of these and liked the interior and have to wonder if it drives like my X5 M50i or possiblyX5 M. I feel like the Charger Scat pack, model S Plaid and Lucid Air Gravity GT, as well as others should be on the table when shopping for straightline speed, especially when considering other options are cheape than the the G90..

I note that all of its standing starts are done in "4WD" mode while the best results I have seen are obtained in "4WD sport" mode which transfers more power to the rear wheels.

Nope, no way.
M3/4 or M8 all day over this.
I can’t believe they are making people plug in this pig 🐖 so it can go significantly slower than the last generation M5

Yeah, it looks cool (not the grill) but geeze they really had an opportunity to do something special and they didn’t.
The new 911 hybrid system is amazing and that’s the approach BMW should have went for.

Don't have to plug it in

Not "significantly" slower, and nobody is driving around with a draggy doing launches from every red light. Real world feel of the G90/99 is very fast with the instant EV torque fill.

Didn't have the opportunity you think they did, due to emissions regs and gearbox limitations

a mild hybrid system like in the GTS is miles different then the legit plug-in system in the G90 from a emissions/fleet regs standpoint. Audi is going with the same system in their upcoming RS6 but with a downsized engine as well.

Unless EU bureaucrats come to their senses and at least stop ratcheting up the regulations, if not ideally start rolling them back a little bit until EV market share organically increases...this is the world we live in now.

I’m not interested in EVs or Hybrids because it feels impure to me.

As far as EU and US regulations I think it’s a joke that they think it’s going to solve the problem or even make a significant dent in it. China produces more greenhouse gases than the United States and EU combined, and let’s not even mention India.
If they were serious about making things better there are many other solutions that would in fact make a big difference and would make the difference quickly.

Yes, it’s a really fast car. It’s probably way faster than 95% of its owners need it to be but my point was that M5 used to strike fear in the hearts of S63 and RS drivers.
Don’t even get me started with the shitshow MB has become with their fake AMGs now.

I’m more disappointed in BMW though because they’ve always put out the fastest, best driving vehicles in the class, and this feels like a half-ass effort.
Just my opinion

I own both a G80 and a G90 and what you are claiming is simply not true. The only time the G80 provides acceleration comparable to the G90 is when using launch control, on the first 100 feet (the G80 is lighter and its launch control is particularly effective). Without the launch control and on a rolling start the G90 is clearly faster. The throttle response is also much quicker, no lag. At 2000 rpm the G90 pushes you into your seat if you press the accelerator, with the G80 you have to downshift two gears.

okay...? the G90 is making 730hp/1000nm on paper and on dynos more like 800hp/1100nm

The ZF box is rated for 1000nm, they don't make a beefier one then that at the moment.

Is the G80 more fun to drive?

I prefer the dimensions of the G80 and especially the driving position which is lower. I really like the M3 but I always considered that its biggest weakness was the lack of road feel in the steering wheel which is also not the most precise. Steering response is better on the M5 and it conveys road feel better. On the other hand, we feel the weight transfer more on the M5, that’s clear. I prefer the sound of the V8 and its instant power thanks to the electric motor. Everyone talks about the weight of the M5, personally it's more its dimensions and its too high driving position that I appreciate less. Two cars that I like for different reasons.

You should really consider getting the CS tune for the G80
A lot of people have it and rave about the steering improvement

The mild hybrid in my m340 is amazing - never even know its there aside from getting 28mpg on average. I can't fathom how a mild hybrid wouldn't be equally efficient give how much weight the plug in system adds - power and weight increasing by the same percentage is not a net win, and dynamics and handling only get worse when weight goes up.

The looks of this car have grown on me a lot. I still really do not like the way they did the two tone interior and I think the seats/layout in m8/m3/x3m are way cooler, but the exterior has grown on me. Oh and I think lightup grills have no place outside of Christmas toy Hess trucks, but that's not specific to the car either.

Here we go... same convo by the same people that have no intentions to buy a car like this. I'd like to know what sort of metric you all are using saying its 'slow'. Unless you have a sub 10 second car I'd keep that comment to yourself lol

Not every F90 runs high 10s in every tests. As of the G80 there is no denying that is probably the fastest car out there for the money but its for a different audience.

Also AutoTopNL tested a F90 LCI Comp 100-200 and got 7.16 compared to 7.18 for this G90. Pretty darn close imo.
