BMW ActiveE lease program coming soon - 700 units worldwide (200 for U.S.)

Over the next year, a leasing program for the ActiveE electric car (based on the 1-series) will be launched worldwide. 600-700 units of the ActiveE car will be available for lease in major cities around the globe. The ActiveE runs off a synchronous electric motor which produces 170hp / 184lb-ft torque. A full charge takes about 4.5 hours allowing a driving range of 100 miles.

Approximately 200 units will be bound for the U.S. and the rest for large cities such as Berlin, Paris, and London.

“The fleet will be between 600 to 700 units, about 200 units for the United States and about 300 to 400 in Europe in large metropolitan areas such as Berlin, Paris and London”.

MW CEO Norbert Reithofer told reporters on Tuesday that 1-series electric car “lays the groundwork for our fully-electric Megacity Vehicle.”

Reithofer added that the company's first full production all-electric car will be built in Leipzig and will go on sale within the next few years.

BMW is developing environmentally friendly cars as a part of its so-called “Project i,” a unit developing low-emission, highly fuel-efficient concepts that was set up in 2008.

How much do we estimate the lease would be? I'm thinking $800. I know it's only $200 more than the Mini (which is a much cheaper car), but they can't put out a 1er for more than $800 a month; looks too expensive even with the car not having any fuel costs.
