The Pres of MINI USA Challenges Porsche to a race!

As baffling as this sounds, the President of MINI USA has challenged Porsche in a race around Road Atlanta! And not against the Boxster or the Cayman, they have challenged the mighty Porsche 911. This is great, I love stuff like this. Even if MINI doesnt win, they still had the balls to do it in the first place, and for that, props.

They will be broadcasting a live video on their Facebook page of the event on June 21st. Porsche has yet to respond, but the track is right around the corner from Porsche's NA headquarters, so it won't be like they wouldn't have a car available, haha. We'll see what happens, but I definitely want to see this race go on.

Interesting marketing and publicity idea. I wonder who the ad agency is? The race itself is totally irrelevant, but the campaign might win with more sales and exposure.

That's why of your Porsche you want to hijack the story line in some way that Mini didn't anticipate. Then watch how fast Mini drops the whole thing.

I would not underestimate a MINI Cooper S, even less as JCW. It is the cheapest fun car you can get in this world.

On a tight track it would get spanked. Here are Nurburing times where the MINI is at a big disadvantage.

Who knows what MINI may bring if this race really happens.. Tricked out AWD Countryman???

159. Porsche Cayenne Turbo (Mk II) 8:33.99 144 ´08 500 / 2355 Patrick Simon
160. Vauxhall VX220 Turbo 8:34 144 ´03 200 / 930 "Sport Auto"
161. Opel Speedster Turbo 8:34 144 ´ 200 / 928 Sportauto
162. BMW Z3 3.0i 8:34 144 ´00 231 / 1330 Sport Auto
163. BMW M3 (E36) 8:35 144 ´96 321 / 1474 Sport Auto

Porsche has politely declined. LAAAAAAAME!

http://jalopnik.com/5560246/porsche-...s-to-race-mini

Quote:
Dear Jim,

Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60 years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes.

But as you also know, Porsche doesn't race for fame, stunts or publicity. We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road.

While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.

Good luck with your race at Road Atlanta on June 21; we hope you enjoy the day.

Sincerely,

Detlev Von Platen
President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America

Funny, he mention Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona, but didnt once mention the one race Porsche has dominated for the last 3 years.

Its funny, that he didnt mention the 24hr of Nurburgring race
