Is this a legitimate job right out of college or a scam?
Hey All,
I had a quick concern that I would like some input on... I recently just graduated college and applied for many finance/accounting jobs on craig's list. I found that monster was full of scams/commission only jobs and kept receiving bogus calls. I took my resume off of monster since I did not want to deal with the non-sense. Anyways, a few days ago I applied for one of many accounting positions that were available on Craig's List. Someone e-mailed me from a personal e-mail address from yahoo and says that their HR department has reviewed my resume and feels that I meet the qualifications and that I am a well qualified candidate, etc. for an Accounting/Bookkeeping position. Here is the sketchy part: 1) They asked me to do an interview on yahoo messenger as I agreed to the following day. They basically told me to be online from 9am-11am and that I would have to be quick and prompt with my responses after they decide what time to send me a message (They sent me a message @10am) 2) The "interview" wasn't really an initial interview, the "hiring chief" just e-mailed me a bunch of stuff regarding the job role, pay, benefits, etc as we chatted on yahoo messenger. I agreed to it and said I can do the stuff listed and have experience with the programs they needed to use. 3) Nothing was tagged on the bottom of their e-mails, everything was typed out including name, no phone #, no company website, nothing. Just the name of the individual e-mailing me and their job title. The next thing he e-mailed me was a list of questions, interview questions for me to answer. I answered them back and let him know I was finished. He said come back online tomorrow at 9am-11am and he will let me know his decision. 4) I asked him a couple questions and for now I do know that the company is based in England. The hardware/software he told me that is necessary to use is required and the funds will be sent to me to buy them. Couple of the interview questions asked was: How would you like to receive payment? Check or direct deposit? Do you know what petty cash is? I asked him if he had a company website, he replied with this: http://www.datatechnologies.co.uk/index.html Here is the e-mail with the job description if anyone is interested in reading it: Here's the Job Description to know what would be expected of you when work commences also to know if you would be able to handle the position. The next step in order to receive your paychecks via direct deposit is to give him your social security number, bank account # and bank routing #. No problem!

Hey! My old boss found me via the Australian alternative to Craigs List lol. She originally emailed me from her personal email account (she was browsing at home), which made me a bit sceptical like you to reply with personal details. So I quickly asked for company details and her to email me from the businesses email account, before I continued with the process... a) that impressed her a lot (security aspect), and b) I would've still been there had I not quit for other reasons. I was in accounts too.
Looking at your case though... sounds a bit shady. Website looks legit however imo. |

Definitely a Scam, the only question is how are they scamming you, the only thing I can think of is they rather you say you want your pay direct deposit so they have your bank account information so they can pull fund from it. Now if you say you want a pay check, i can see them making the oh we paid you too much please wire us the different back immediately. Other than that I am not sure what their angle would be.
Anyway, Monster should not be fill with scam, Monster is pretty good about that. Most like being accounting or Finance background, there are the companies who want you come in and do telemarketing of financial services and such and these may appear as a scam they are real, but they are mostly commission so if you do not get anyone to sign up you do not make anything. They will tell you to call family and friends and get them first since they are easier, and once you suck them in and can not get another knew they do not have to pay you and you leave. I personally would stay away from Craiglist, since most reputable companies use HotJobs, Career Builder, Monster, Dice, and a number of other job posting boards. I know some companies do post on Craiglist, however do you want to work for a company who can only afford free job posting, sounds like they can not afford to pay you. |

Right out of college a friend was being "recruited" by a "marketing" firm. She flew to LA twice to "interview." I looked at the website with her, looked very legit and she was under the impression she would be working with a team to develop marketing plans for small and mid-size businesses.
Turns out it was basically a heavily commissioned door to door sales job, selling a pre-packaged standardized plan consisting of mainly plug and play emails to small and mid-size businesses. Not a total scam, but definitely misleading. CSB Pics of friend (second from the right) |

People need to be a bit more savvy when it comes to these things. The first thing you always do when you receive any type of job offer is research the company. I typed "Data Technologies Limited Scam" into google and the results were clear. As others have mentioned, unless the job offer is from Yahoo themselves, a yahoo.com email is a dead giveaway for fraud. See below:

here is some other information
Domain name: datatechnologies.co.uk Registrant: Data Technologies Ltd Registrant type: UK Limited Company, (Company number: 2819888) Registrant's address: 25 Western Avenue Kirkby in Ashfield Kirkby-in-Ashfield Nottingham NG17 7FT United Kingdom Registrar: 1 & 1 Internet AG [Tag = SCHLUND] URL: http://www.1and1.co.uk or http://registrar.1und1.info Relevant dates: Registered on: 30-Jun-1998 Renewal date: 30-Jun-2012 Last updated: 19-Jul-2010 Registration status: Registered until renewal date. Name servers: ns10.schlund.de ns9.schlund.de Usually Scammer site address on the webpage does not match which is listed in the Domain registry Here is some other useful information http://www.192.com/business/nottingh...e-1a9a2f73e03a They seem to be real, since you can get a credit report on them and the list the D&B # which will allow you to get a credit history on them and if they had real US customer then they would need a D&B since most real business in the US would at least do a credit check on them. If you read about them it appears they sell systems with pre-package software solutions. Maybe this is how they make money the load up computer with software and you pay to get it and they reimburse you only if you can sign up clients in your local area to do clerical and accounting book work. Here is some more information about them the website is register to this company http://www.192.com/business/nottingh...5-4b3f149ff5f3 Different street address than what the website shows Last edited by Maestro; 02-01-2011 at 02:56 PM.. |
