It's actually because Indians have a deep dislike for deodorant. Don't visit India in the summer if you're not used to it.

Funny you mention this. At every convenience store I've been to in the country, the owner/manager/guy behind the counter will always strike up a conversation...in Hindi. I figure that if we're going to own the convenience store market, why don't we make them more unique? I'm not Punjabi.
Sikhs (they follow Sikhism, a distinct religion of India) wear the turban. They have to follow certain other principles, as well: they can't cut any of their hair, they have to carry a knife with them, etc.

Most Sikhs are Punjabis, but most Punjabis are NOT Sikhs.
Broadly speaking, there's 3 subsets in the US:
Punjabis - these are the guys that drive taxis, own Indian restaurants, etc. Sikh Punjabis have the last name "Singh"
Gujaratis - these are the guys that own motels and 7/11's (last name is often 'Patel', they're usually found in business or medicine.
South Indian - IT guys. These are quite often the guys you speak to when you call Dell. Don't ask me to call and speak to them on your behalf, as they don't speak Hindi, either. Their languages are more similar to Thai than Hindi, it's incomprehensible to North Indians.
Bangladeshis - not Indians, but often labeled as such. These guys run all the street stalls and Subway sandwich shops, for some reason.
