Man With Down Syndrome Beat By Police Over Colostomy Bag
WTF?
So having a bulge in your clothing gives police probable cause to your being detained and pat down? Focking crazy! ----- A twenty-two-year-old man with down syndrome is recovering from his injuries nearly a week after Miami-Dade police officers beat him outside his home. According to police reports, a violent confrontation ensued after officers tried to handcuff Gilberto Powell to investigate a bulge they spotted in his pants. After he was detained they realized the bulge in his waistband was a colostomy bag.

Wait... I'm normally all for hardcore profiling, but I think these kind of stories are making me change my mind.
So, this poor kid had a "bulge"?? That's suspicion enough these days? F that. Kinda like people getting LEO attention for printing... Ridiculous. |

How many times does this have to happen?
Officer should be fired and charged but likely will not be because PO unions and other police officers will probably defend them, they themselves do not want to be fired so they band together. The police will end up losing the public's trust because the bad cop is allowed to stay on the force, making the job of every police officer in that district harder. I don't understand why good officers lack the foresight to see that their jobs would go a lot easier if the public didn't worry about having to deal with 'bad apple' cops. |

simple way to put it, it's a bag that collects your shit outside of your stomach...since your asshole no longer works... he should've just let those officers pat him down and burst that bag, get shit all over their hands...

thats pretty sad but this is what happens when most of the police force is composed of HS drop outs and before any one talks shit, I know plenty of police officers in the SFL area that were all HS drop outs and only became cops because its was a last resort type of thing

It wasn't right but I don't blame the cops. People are dangerous these days and having assumptions about ANYTHING can mean the difference between life and death. The cops wanted to arrest him so they could securely check out what that bulge was, to them it could have been a weapon or something. After they found out what it was, I'm sure they would have let him go. He resisted being arrested, and I don't know why he did that in the first place. Cops still shouldn't have gone that far though and I'm sure they didnt know he had down syndrome.

You must be from California. Umm... even if the bulge looked exactly like a firearm, those jerks have no business harassing him, you or anybody. I realize Miami is different than the rest of Florida, but they're usually pretty good down there with that sort of stuff. I believe that Florida is a castle doctrine/stand your ground state to boot (as they all should be). What we really need is to make it lawful to resist false arrest/detention. That way, if you're in the right, treat them like any other thug that's trying to accost you... Put em down. ahhh liberty... I'm not sure I ever truly had it, but it was a nice dream. |

Guy walking down the street. Bulge where his waist is, where weapons are commonly carried He runs away from the police He resists arrest From the perspective of the police, that's a pretty good sign of someone with a weapon. Not agreeing with the police, just saying that they weren't out to get him. =/ |
