Get solid leak down numbers. You don't want to work on a sick S38. Expensive! Also when were the timing chains done? Tensioner and guides should be checked. Looks great!

Looks good...check all service records to confirm what has been done or not done to the car. They can become a major headache if they were not serviced well. GL.

I can see that the interior has been kept sooo clean, so that's a good thing. looks great. I would invest 100-200 to have a mechanic look over all the components in the car. clutch, engine, leaks, valves, rusts, electrics, window motor... everything. always negotiate the price though... I would say 10500 or so.

If everything checks out..YES! It's going to be a classic in a few years. It's a good investment and that's a very clean one.

Verrrrrrrry nice car! I'd love to have one myself.
In addition to oil changes and other old school maintenance items, the valves need adjusting every 30K, but you're probably not going to rack commuter miles on it...

I would buy it for $500. What's got you wondering? It's looks like an incredibly good deal for that price. Hell, even if the motor and suspension are totally shot, you could replace both and still have a good deal based on the pics of the body and interior.

Nice car! but goodness what were steering wheel designers thinking in the 90's? "Let's try to make this look like the underside of a milk jug" seems a fit

Personally I think that is wayyy too much for a car that old. The things 20 years old.

if you're only gripe with the car is because it's old then you know nothing about cars... 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, est price. $10.8 million-30 million 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, est price $12.4 million 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf, est price $11 million These are all old cars. Granted this is a BMW and not a ferrari classic, but age should not really be considered if it is well maintained.

Oops...my mistake. Sorry. In that case, If you have another car to drive in case this one becomes a "labor or love," it probably is a good buy. As I said earlier, it looks like a sweet car, but at its age, you may have some fixing-up to do for it to be in prime running order again. Once it is, though, it'll be a keeper.

Nice thing about M5 owners are that they usually maintain their vehicles. Like others have mentioned, get leak down numbers and ask the owner for all maintenance records. Things that tend to go around 100K miles are front/rear suspension and bushings, valve cover gaskets, oil filter gaskets, fan, water pumps to name a few. If you keep these up and running, the S38 is a tank and will last you a few hundred K miles. Post on bimmerforums.com as the e34 crowd is much more knowledgeable.
One thing to look for is rust at the base of all the doors (beneath the trim). It's a huge design flaw that BMW had with the e34s. There's a removable piece of trim at the base of all the doors. Dirt and grit get in between the trim and the door and rust begins to form over time. It happens to most all e34s. If there's rust and it's fixable, get it fixed asap. Otherwise, you'll be looking at new doors. GL! Post pics if you get it. |
