Hmmmm, written by a "writer" from San Fran. I think that whatever substances were consumed before writing that article did indeed affect judgement.
For, while Zep is up there, they are not, IMHO over and above the Beatles in the manner in which the article intimates. But Zep were every bit as revolutionary.

Ozzy is a rock god in the same vein regardless of what the writer says. Love him or hate him or if you prefer Dio-Sabbath over Ozzy-Sabbath and even if you hate his solo work, Ozzy is still relevant today much more than Plant who most people would pass on the street without knowing it.
If Ozzy could get Butler, Iommi and Ward together for a genuine reuinion it would be just as huge as Zep's get-together. And had Deep Purple not changed their line up every three weeks, I would nominate Blackmore and Gillan but I can't see the same furor over a Gillan, Lord, Paice, Blackmore, Glover reuninon. The Beatles were never 'Rock Gods'. McCartney, like Clapton, Daltry and others are almost royalty, especially in the UK but none are gods although EC should be.. IMO, nobody else qualifies except Zep, Sabbath and maybe Purple. Rush? No. Yes? No. Def Leppard? NO! Scorpions? No. Priest? No. ad infinitum

One must have respect for the classics man.
Beatles: hell yes. Zep: of course-it invented a genre to this day. Black Sabbath-good point; accepted. What about AC/DC ? What about Genesis/Gabriel? What about the quite exquisite U2 ? Oh wait, there is more - The Clash.....The Sexpistols-who has done more with only one album out!!!!!! You know, choosing is a b.

Ozzy? If it weren't for his TV show, the recognition factor would not be there. I have to take Page and Plant over Ozzy.
Others who deserve mention, imho: Hendrix. Clapton. GNR came close had they longevity (Rose/Slash) Eddie Van Halen David Gilmour Freddie Mercury (pop?) Angus Young Jim Morrison U2, are they really rock or pop like the Beatles? |

With some of the artists listed above one has to include the Rolling Stones. They inspired many of the artists listed above and they are still selling out arenas today. 45 years and counting. The Stones may be one of the most influential rock bands of all time.
For my money I will always prefer Led Zeppelin but I cant deny the Stones came before LedZep and influenced their music. |

We're not talking about who was influential, we're talking about who would be considered a 'Rock God'.
I'm not discounting anything that the above bands have churned out but the only candidates are Plant and Ozzy. And, probably Gene Simmons lol.

There is not, and never will be, any band as great as Zeppelin. End of story. Good day.

Plant, Page, Bonham were incomparable. Stairway to Heaven was the #1 rock song for year after year after year. All their songs were so unique and euphoric.
No other group ever comes close. |
