Hey all,

I just placed my order for a Sony KDL-55W900A LED TV.

It was time to retire the old Samsung LN-T4671F from 2009 after 5 good years. I am pretty excited about this new TV. I have looked at it in the stores and the color rendition and clarity are simply stunning. I opted not to go with a 4K unit as there is almost no media at the moment that can handle the immense data required to transport this type of feed. I may have to make the jump with the next purchase though.

Broadcasters are still trying to catch up with HD, most content broadcast is 720p or 1080i. 1080p is rare and UHD (4K etc.) is just pie in the sky. It's a case of being prepared for the future when the UHD content is available, by which time the bar wil be set higher.

I don't think it's BS. It's just that there is currently no broadcast content, and very little content available for purchase, that is actually 4k quality.

I think it's more future proofing than anything, but welcome a discussion on the topic. I am no expert, just relaying my thoughts from a discussion I had with a lowly Sony store employee once.

4k is basically the next gen of HD. They are calling it UHD (Ultra High Def). But once again the content to support this resolution is not yet available.

So you're basically spending all this extra money on the hope that one day soon broadcasters or media providers will support this resolution.

I've seen 4K Sony's and was blown away with how high the quality was. It's sharper than real life almost. Very impressive.

I've seen the Sony 4k demo. Wasn't blown away at all. Problem is many people don't want to spend the money to get a real good quality TV. Hence the demise of Pioneer from the plasma TV business. Also most people don't care enough to even have their TVs ISF calibrated.

I can be accused of being a Pioneer snob, but I am speaking from my own personal opinion. I have two Pioneer Elite plasma sets. One is a pretty old 1010HD which is still pretty decent compared to current TVs. It does suffer from poorer black level performance. My reference and flagship TV is the 141FD. It's the last of the Kuro 9G TVs. When Pioneer announced they were getting out of the TV business, I immediately snatched one up. Both of these TVs have been ISF calibrated and the 141FD still trumps pretty much all TVs on the market today.

Until OLED becomes more reasonable in both price and size, I'll wait before I even considering replacing either of my Pioneers.

I have a 50'' Pioneer Kuro (Pro1150). The best HD TV I have owned, still going strong after 6 years (had to repair it once with a fault and wouldn't turn on) but other than that, the black levels and contrast are still better than any of the other TVs I see on the market. I have been asked many times by friends if I would sell and my answer is always been never.

Samsungs are a very good choice TV if you stay under 36''. Anything over that size, I have been really disappointed with the picture quality.

Although I don't own one yet, I'm putting all my hopes into UHD since I was able to skip the whole 3D thing. I remember reading some where that UHD is the next step for 3D content. I've never been fascinated with the current 3D technology we have especially in theaters. I'd much rather watch non-3D on my projector.

I like a tv for the whole package. Like I want a great picture, but also wifi/apps/energy saving/and anything else extra.
I do feel that even though 4k isnt here yet, those TV's still put out better pictures for regular HD then older ones. May be just in my head, and i don't own one. I have a Sony 3d LCD tv. But I have had alot of comments about how great my TV looks when people are over. I have one friend that asks if I got a new TV every couple months.
I've found that people are cheap when it comes to their TV's. And will have denial that higher end ones are better.

they look good, but on a regular HD Box with HDMI's, they look no better than any regular non 4K HD TV....

I got as 75" Samsung LED and I wouldn't trade it for ANY 4K TV at the moment....

You guys do know that Panasonic purchased all of the technology from pioneer when they pulled out of the business and currently offer plasma sets that are equal to or better than the Kuro sets you hold in such high regard, right?

I wasn't even particularly impressed with the HD demo. One was on a 50" set which had the newer Total Recall 4K demo running. It was a good picture but didn't blow me away.

The other demo was on a bigger screen. I don't remember the size. It was displaying the red demo reel which has images of a bunch of red. What I wasn't impressed with and I picked up on immediately was the red bleed over with the fruit on the table. To me, it's totally unacceptable to have this type of issue on a modern TV.

Both screens were from Sony.

While they purchased the technology, it's debate able with how much of that technology has made it into their current sets. While the Panasonics are very good sets and I would consider purchasing one if I was in the market today, there's nothing compelling to make me want to replace any of my Pioneers especially when they're still working fine.

And Panasonic isn't going to be in the plasma market much longer. Again, it says a lot that Pioneer TVs which are many years old still can compete with the best of what's out there currently. Imagine if people actually got a clue with what constitutes a good picture and actually bought a quality TV instead of what just pops picture wise. Imagine how good TVs would be now had Pioneer stayed in the TV business.
