Audi S5 V8
What do you guys think of the S5.
Before answering consider this. I would be set on the V8 because 1 it's cheaper and 2, it sounds so much better and I think it's 300+ hp would be sufficient. Also my problem is I hear they have engine problems. I also hear that owning a VW out of warranty is suicide. If anyone ones an s4/5 with a v8 please let me know how it's going. All opinions are welcome and I do apologize if this has already been covered but we all like talking cars anyway so no harm done. Thanks! |

I did a lot of research on the V8 S5's and it seems they are actually pretty reliable. My mom's Q5 with 62k is on the same platform and shares many, many parts with the S5 and has been rock solid. Only problem is carbon buildup.. Audi was a very early DI adopter and the 4.2 reflects that.. the engine is bulletproof as far as I could tell but every 40-50k the intake manifold and valves have to cleaned or it runs like shit. Much, much worse than on the 335i where you can wait until 120k to clean.
As far as the rest of the car.. nothing like a V8. Looks sharper and more dramatic than an E92. Parked next to one a couple months ago and the S5 just looked more expensive, more special.. interior and seats are nicer too. |

I've heard you should buy audit new and not used due I engine issues. If your going I buy used make sure you have warranty. The s4 is a nice car.

I had an B6 S4 which has basically the same engine. Great noise with 2 magnaflow mufflers but the engine has issues. Especially after a while you will get timing chain rattle because of the worn guides. And guess what, the engine has ALL the important bits mounted to the firewall. AC, chains, etc. I was experiencing a little rattle and the bill would have mounted to +/- $8K because the engine has to come out completely and replacing all the guides requires special tools.
That's when I bought an E92.

The Audi 4.2 V8 is complete crap.
Enjoy when the timing chain guides break, and it costs you 10k to have the motor pulled and the chain repaired (because some idiot put the chain on the back of the motor). I used to help out at a German shop (mostly for fun and experience, but I was paid), and we would laugh whenever a B6 or B7 S4 came in for chain problems. The new B8 supercharged V6 is nice, but an Audi will never beat a Bimmer. I love both brands, but AWD leads to massive understear. That and we don't drive a "luxury" marquis of any car, BMW is BMW. Plain as that. Audi is a fancy Volkswagen, and it retains of some the feel, and quality of build. I've never owned or worked on a car as well put together as a BMW.

I think the s5 looks ugly. It looks bulky and not sporty. The front is okay, but the wide view and rear of the car I am not a fan at all. Everything else about it seems nice thought. Good performance and very nice interior. Definitely not a car I would consider over a 335 though.

Gas mileage
I had the v8 before my 335. I regret selling it so much Had it till 50k miles and not 1 issue. I had full downpipe and exhaust from AWE and it sounded awesome. Personally without it the sound was nonexistent I actually sold it due to the lack of tuning possibility short of a supercharger. If I had the v6 supercharged engine I would have kept it. It is faster, and more tunable then the v8, and honestly stock for stock they sound pretty similar. Now full exhaust it prob is a whole different story. I would go with the v6 ones personally. The v8 was very slow compared to my FBO e93 though, but it was more unique and looks a lot more classy. The interior was also way nicer in the Audi. |

As an owner of both models I think I can give some good input. Back in 2008 I compared the Audi S5 against the BMW 335i and picked the Audi over the BMW, not only because of the V8 but because of the superior styling, interior, and features of Audi over BMW. Then in 2011 we were looking for a replacement for my old E36 convertible and settled on the E93 335i, so now I have a pretty good feeling for the features and advantages of each. The S5 is still my favorite daily driver, unless the sun is out and I can go topless. The interior of the BMW is not up to the same level as the Audi, even though it's 3 years newer. The iDrive is a mess. And the S5 is the only car I've ever had where people complement its design - strangers in parking lots and at gas station and even when stopped at a traffic light will say "nice car!" Haven't had that happen with a BMW since 1980 - the E90 family 3-series is just so common looking that it's almost invisible. But to be fair, much of my fondness for the S5 is due to the fact that it has a manual tranny whereas the BMW is auto ( a concession to the wife). I have not driven a manual 335i, but if it's anything like my old E36 then perhaps my judgement would change - the Audi manual tranny takes some getting used to, especially to do heel-and-toe properly.
