Somewhat similar to the handgun thread, but post up your rifles and thoughts:

I'm looking to get into long distance target shooting (don't have a rifle yet), with the possibility one day of using it to hunt (but mainly it will be used for target practice). I'm looking at getting a centre fire rifle, but aside from that, looking for suggestions on rifles as there seems to be an overwhelming number of options out there.

Anyone do any long range target practice - if so, what do you use? While I probably won't get to use the 1000 metre range often, I'd be looking to get out there a couple of times, but probably more time would be spent at the 250 metre range (I know this isn't exactly a long distance, but it is the longest one I have nearby).

I'm looking for something with a higher calibre than a .22, but something that doesn't kick like a mule when you fire either, as I'd like to spend some time at the range.

This is my toy for distance. I don't have that scope on it anymore though. It's fun and hella accurate. It doesn't have much kick at all. But from what it sounds like, you're not looking to get an AR-15. Consider getting one. You won't regret it!

I prefer a bolt action for longer range shooting. My current long gun is a Remington 700 with a heavy barrel. It's chambered for .308, but you can order it in lots of different calibers.

Thanks guys - I too would prefer to get a bolt action (and up in Canada, they're a lot easier to get - an AR-15 would likely fall into the restricted category which would be a pain), but appreciate advice so far.

Patrick - is that a limb saver / some sort of pad on the butt of your rifle? What is the kick like? Can you tell me a little more about the gun - did you have that custom done then? What scope is that, and what sort of distance do you use it for?

Do you find the .308 has decent ballistics on long range shots?

Real world. I have a custom Rem700 in an AI AICS chassis built by KMW Long Range Solutions in 308. With hand loaded ammo, I can reach targets out to 1200-1300 yards. Factory 308 ammo is going to make 1000 yards, but just barely, and with 175 grain bullets, not the 168's. But it is very heavy, so not practical for hunting. Hunting rifles and long range precision rifles have different usage requirements, so I really suggest two rifles: one for hunting that is light enough to carry all day and accurate enough. The other is the no-holds-barred precision rig.

Yep. I shoot the 30-.06 and it's deadly accurate from 300 yards in. My friend shoots the same in 7 mm and he is lethal from 500 yards.

The pad on the buttstock is a cheek rest. The little plastic sleeve holds the range calculations for the scope, I just didn't have it in the sleeve for the picture.

The scope is a 4-16x50 Millett TRS-1 mil dot-bar mounted with LaRue tactical ultra-low rings and a 20 MOA rail. Great entry level scope with mil-dot crosshairs and good magnification.

The .308 round kicks, but it's nothing like a 30-06 or 7mm mag. I love the .308 because it flies long, straight, and flat. I haven't had a chance to bring it to a range longer than 200 yards yet. I'm sure it shoots way better than I do!

This is one of Remington's factory rifles, however I did custom order it with a left hand bolt cuz I'm a southpaw.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and just got an AR-15.

Last weekend, I was hitting a torso-size target with the .22 about 80% of the time at 225 yards with cheap ammo and iron sights. left/right it was dead on...I just had to estimate how high to aim to loft the bullet. Can anyone recommend an OK but cheap scope?

I just got the AR. With a muzzle brake and nice buffer recoil is nice and smooth. It's a straight path from the muzzle to the stock, so it stays right on target. It's really almost as easy to shoot as the .22- just MUCH louder.

A guy at the range had one with a long barrel, big scope, bipod, and supressor. He let me shoot it and I hit a target the size of a quarter at 100 yards.

Does anyone have a suggestion for optics for the AR? I would like to be able to shoot long range now and then for fun, but still have convenient access to the iron sights or a red dot for home defense and such.
