Large HDTV Transport 52"

Hi guys,

My gf surprised me with a large 52" hdtv for our 5 year anni. As i don't have fold down seats, i know for certain that it won't fit my e90.

However, I have a friend with a Toyota Highlander that's willing to help me out. Do you guys think that the tv will fit in the Highlander without issues - box and all? I'm planning to pick up tomorrow morning, so I would hate to go there to see it won't fit the Highlander, and have to go to Uhaul to rent a van just to transport this tv.

I fit a 51" in my e60 so I'd imagine it will work out fine for you.

Although technically speaking if it's a plasma I don't think you are supposed to lay it on its side.

Plasma or LCD/LED? Plasma must stay upright, while led or lcd can be layed down. When I bought my 50" Plasma about 5 years ago, I ended up needing to rent a moving van for a day to get it home. I didn't have anyone with a truck at the time, and the store was about an hour away.

If you were nearby, I'd help you transport it in my SUV. But you are in MD...

Newer Highlanders have bigger trunk openings, possibly big enough for 52". Get exact measurements of TV box and measure trunk opening in Highlander.

I did some quick research. I found a 52in TV that had a height of 29 inches. Each TV is different, plus the packaging increases the height, so lets be generous and say the TV in the box is 34 inches. A 2001 generation Highlander has a cargo area height of 36 inches. I can't find that info for a newer generation Highlander, but the overall capacity has increased to 95 cubic feet from 81 cubic feet, so it stands to reason the height is similar if not a tad taller. It should fit, but if it doesn't, you can rent a pickup from UHaul for $19 bucks I think. Even home Depot does pickup rentals by the hour if it came down to that.

cant you just put it in the backseats?

I had someone put a 55 inch tv in the back of a 55 vw jetta. (i sell tvs)

but ive never tried with the e90s

52" in a box is hard to tell, it all depends on which brand and led or plasma.
Even though plasma is nearly same thickness as LED these days, box can be bigger depends on the brand.
Last year's sammy's plasma box was really thin but this year's model has much thicker box due to new packaging design and it will NOT in the highlander as you CANNOT lay it down. If I were you, I could either get a open cab type truck to transport it and be safe than sorry.

Fold down the back seat (probably 60/40 split, fold down one side), then put the TV through standing up at an angle. I've done a 46" with box like that in a Toyota 4Runner, without having to lean the TV much. For the 55" we had a truck bed tow thingy, but I think it would have fit inside 4Runner as well. Remember to lean it on the back side of the TV, it's usually labeled on the box which side is up.

I had to lay my 50'' plasma on an angle in my 02 Pathfinder. In fact, I had no clue that it had to be upright, but I didn't have mine like that and its been perfect for over a year....but that's just me G.

i got a 52" plasma not too long ago and i threw it in flat on the back of my SUV and ditto in the house when i was trying to bolt the wall frame thing and it works fine. it's like one inch+ thick but the box is still wide because the stand is included and that's like a foot wide.

Isn't the Highlander essentially the same dimensionally as the RX? We got a 52" plasma and it barely fit (has to stay upright). I had my wife sit back there and keep it upright (no stand) during the drive. No way would it have fit with the box. That was with a second gen RX btw. If it's an LCD, it'll fit no problem, as you don't need to keep it upright.

Highlander is more boxy and has room for a 3rd row.

Just a word of caution, if it's a plasma set, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, put it so the screen is facing down or up, it must be facing a side. It will damage the screen if you do that. LCD-type displays can but put face down, but it is safer to transport them with the screen facing a side (if you hit a bump, you don't want the screen to potentially make impact with the floor).

Only tip I got for ya'

I put a 50" plasma in the back of my E92. I took it out of the box and put it in the backseat. Worked perfectly fine.
