I need an opinion: Which is better E39 M5 or E60

I've driven an E39 M5 and I have also driven an E60 M5. My conclusion is that they are both great cars, but I feel like I would pick the E39 absence a 100 hp power difference.

The biggest positive about the E39, is that the torque hits you at a low RPM where as in the E60 you have to wait for the higher revs to kick in before you feel it.

What are your thoughts?

E60. High revs are a positive. A 4-door that sounds like a exotic. Is their a 4-door car that sounds better?

Maserati sounds better, looks a little off though.

Not a fan of SMG in the E60, or the non defeatable stability control and wonky manual if you go that route. Why not an E90 M3?

It is the other way round, the Maserati doesn't sound better, but looks better though.

But that is because no stock M car sounds good, you need an aftermarket exhaust.

Regarding Maserati's they are "perfect" cars, their problem is quality and reliability what makes them imperfect.

Love them both, however I'd take the E60 if given the option.

No way the Maserati sounds better. The E60 high revving V10 is pure sex.

I think you got ur answer... E60 V10! Just the sound of the V10 uncorked is worth it alone imo

The F10 is a letdown in my book. The S85 engine is so good that the SMG issues can be overlooked for the most part and it's noise is better in every way (even when stock) than the noise coming from the F10's speakers.

But back on point: both are great cars. The E39 is more tame but is a better drive because of having the correct 6-speed and is relatively light while the E60 is a brute you really have to work to get right. I'd choose the E60 any day because of that S85 and I love it's front end. I'd replace the heavy ass seats with some Recaro Pole Positions and delete some of the bullshit like iDrive and such.

Do you want to be bankrupt when it breaks or reaaaaallly bankrupt?

E39's have a long list of problems and are pretty expensive to maintain in the long-run. If you go that route make sure you get one thats been well cared. Be wary of any "bargains" you may run across.

I don't know too much about the E60's admittedly but I have blown one up at the BMW Performance Driving school. They are wicked no doubt... that V10 is still one of my favorite sounding engines. The E60 M5 was just a strange car in the sense that's a big heavy saloon with a high hp, low torque engine... not exactly the recipe for a good daily driver. Another thing to think about is that the E60 M5 has a small gas tank and gets about 14mpg when you're being nice to it so you'll be spending a lot of time at the pump.

Can't go wrong with either if you're willing to dish out the cash for them.
