Lesson learned: Don't put petrol gas into a diesel car
I'll share a funny story. Well, it wasn't too funny at the time. But while on vacation in Iceland last week, I put petrol gas into my diesel rental car.
I know, I know what you're thinking, stupid American, he knows nothing about cars. Not entirely so. In fact two days earlier I filled the car up with diesel fuel. I knew perfectly well the car was a diesel car. I just had a lot on my mind and wasn't paying attention. Plus, in America, when you have a petrol gas car, it's physically impossible to fit a diesel nozzle into it. So I'm used to a fool proof method at home. Too bad it doesn't work that way when the car is diesel. I immediately realized the error of my ways when I returned the handle to the pump. So fortunately I never started the car's ignition with the wrong fuel. That would have been a disaster for the engine. The mechanic guy couldn't syphon the gas out through the exterior fuel cap and actually had to take apart the main fuel tank cap inside the car. It wasn't an easy task. Lesson definitely learned. I wasted an entire tank of petrol and I had to pay the mechanic for an 1.5 hour of his time. I'm very fortunate the people at the petrol station were helpful in finding me the mechanic, because this all ocurred about an hour outside of Reykjavik city. |

Good story, thx for sharing. 99% of people on this forum will probably never see Iceland. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Yea Toughluck, Iceland was truly fantastic. After much planning and research, the trip was truly beyond my expectations. I highly recommend it after you've done the whole European thing and looking for something different.
You're exactly right. The haters are just jealous because they've never been to Iceland and never partied on Laugavegur Street with gorgeous scandanavian women until 4 AM in the morning. Perfectly understandable. |

I'm guessing that they don't have the green nozzles there....

At least you didn't try putting gas into an electric car.
