Stelvio Pass

Hi,

I have wanted to drive the stelvio pass for years and thinking about doing it when my car is delivered, hopefully end of october ish.

Has anyone driven it, and if so at that time of year ?

Sure, whenever me and my friends get sick of doing cruises by the local strip malls, we just shoot over to the Stelvio Pass in Italy for a few. Or when we get sick of that, sometimes we just head over to the Autobahn in Germany or the Transfăgărășan highway in Romania.

We usually just like to hang out in front of the local McDonald's on most Friday nights though.

Might change it up a little, deciding between Burger King and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I did it in mid-June a couple of years ago. It was beautiful, but maybe not the best for actually driving unless you really like switchbacks. I was in a 110 HP turbo-diesel, so my experience may not be quite as good as with a better car.

It's quite possible that the pass could be snowy at that time of year, but I am not sure. There was still snow/ice at the top of pass in mid-June (but not on the roads).

(sorry for the wide images...)

I did it with my wife last October (26th to be exact)... it was a great time to drive the roads. They were damp on the switchbacks due to melting snow, but otherwise an awesome drive. The temperatures were also mild (5-10 degrees) if you enjoy the cold.

...not forgetting the cup of joe at the crest of the pass.

Those must be HDR shots, right? My photos could definitely benefit from that...

Thanks, it looks stunning.

I have just been given a delivery date of December 10th so think it may now have to wait until next year.
