what was xp style exactly, i never use thumbnails except in folders with pictures, the rest are detail view, from what your saying your viewing folders as thumbnails which ive never done, i think i see the "sliver" your talking about (its several pictures coing out of the folder like pages in a folder?) i think in XP the folder was divided into 4 small squares with a picture in each square... (which if i rem right was harder to see O_o)

which vista do you have

In XP, by default it would split it to four pictures. However you could go and pick one picture you would want to take up the whole space. This was nice because you could see many many icons at once, and each folder had a picture large enough to clearly see which pictures are in that folder..

I run Vista Ultimate at at work and XP at home. I ran the beta for a while at home too and decided that for performance reasons, I wouldn't upgrade the older PC to Vista. That said, downgrading a new computer to XP is just dumb. Like it or not, Vista is the future platform - you just need 2gigs of ram. Go back a few years and everyone was hating on XP too.

I personally find Vista more stable than XP (not one system crash in 6 months.) The only time it did crash was while applying updates during shutdown - it restarted just fine. Crashes anyone else is getting are hardware related. 3rd party driver support is embarrasingly poor given the time that hardware makers had to write them (Nvidia???) It's not like we didn't know Vista was coming. Vista is also way more secure than XP - I don't know of any critical security issue so far with Vista.

Vista SP1 comes out Q1 next year. It will contain performance numerous improvements. If you don't NEED to upgrade, I would wait until then. SP1 won't have any feature enhancements, it's a performance patch to address issues like those whose posted above have experienced.

And for the record, I'm a Mac guy. OS X ftw. Outside work, the only reason I run a M$ Windows box is for games.

My fiances new Sony Vaio FZ laptop has vista. She has 2 gig ram, and duel 2.0 processors plus the best video card offered. So far I'm not a big fan of it but it seems alright. Some items have been renamed which is a PITA at first but you get used to it. The user controls can be a little clunky at first as well.

At the moment I still prefer my Dell 6400 laptop with XP. I have 2 gigs ram, duel 1.84 processors and the best video card offered at the time. My laptop smokes the new one hands down even with the slower processors. I'm thinking of bumping to 4 gigs of ram for shits and giggles.

I also never understood how so many people find a way to crash their systems. I run my laptop without a firewall, disabling windoz updates and bare minimum virus and internet protection and still have not gotten 1 virus and so much as a system hiccup after almost a year and a half. I store all important info on a external HD and don't go clicking every link to every website.

Anyone else remember when PC/win users would bash mac's for being "too protective" and restrictive in letting the user change or do anything to the computer, even if it was potentially harmful? They (I) had this, "I understand the operating system, and I requested it to do something, I know what I'm doing, now why is it assuming I'm only 5 years old and cannot handle deleting an actual file off of the hard drive" mentality. Interesting reports I'm hearing from Vista as well 8)

Also, anyone remember when XP came out and people rejected it, called it a massive memory hog, buggy , piece of crap? Some even backloaded win 98 SE. (one guy I know still runs it).

It just seems like I've been down this road before 8) Although I have no intention of buying VISTA. I'm sure , whether I like it or not, I'll eventually be running it too. Still can't bring myself defect to Macs.

Vista is fine. Everyone hates MS for some reason or another and Vista just gave them the bandwagon to hop on to do just that...again.

I did have some issues with the 64 bit ver so I went to the 32 bit ver. The installation process was fine. No major driver issues. Some slightly noticeable degredation in gaming performance; but guess what? Same issues between 98 and XP...or have we forgotten?

UAC was the first thing I disabled. There are several other services that can be disabled to help things along. And no, they don't come back. If you don't care about being fancy, disable the aero glass component (if your ver applies).

I agree with 533...these are petty issues. Nothing more.
I have horrible memories of Windows 98. I never saw so many blue screens of death in my life...

I spoke too soon (see pic)

The problem event name makes me laugh "BlueScreen". Only thing I did earlier in the day was to plug in a new flash drive and use the readyboost feature... One crash since March isn't bad though.

Been using Vista for a little while now. a little after it came out. Have had no errors or anything. Shut off the annoying security.

I just need more ram and better video card and it will run even more smooth.

Still looking at getting a mac laptop though.
