Black Glass
It's everywhere now and it's butt-ugly. Started out just SUVs had it and of course the occasional limousine. Now nearly every new car has it and not only does it make traffic unsafe by preventing ppl behind from seeing, it just looks ugly when only half the side view is tinted and half is clear. Ugh.
It even makes SUVs look fatter It would look fine to tint just the rear window and leave the side windows clear, or tint all the side windows (not usually legal) but this half-and-half business just looks cheesy and low-class. But since it's an option on many vehicles associated with upscale packages, we're going to have to wait a while before this fad passes |

It does look goofy. Which is why I tinted all my windows except for the windshield. It just looks better that way.

Overly tinted front windows are totally illegal in a lot of places so that's why only the rear gets done. I had my front windows tinted but chose to remove it due to it being too dark at night, totally illegal and also on an all black car it just looked retarded. With my rear windows tinted dark it gives the appearance that the factory tint on the front is darker than it is as less light can enter the car in total. IMO if you want to be legal (if it is illegal where you are) and tint the front then go for a light tint up front and dark in the rear to generate the 'all tinted' look from certain angles; sadly if you want a block-black look then you'll just have to go limo all over.

I had mine done with 5% rear (limo level) and 15 or 20% on the sides. It doesn't hamper my vision one iota.

I think for a lot of the cars referenced the rear windows being dark is more of a function than form thing. If you have kids in the back seat its nice to have the darker windows for them. A lot of states have laws that the front side windows and windshield can't be darker than X% but the rear windows can be darker. People do ignore this a lot, but can still be cited for it.
Interior color plays a factor too. When I bought my 3000GT the tint tested too dark for Maryland's 35% law. After re-tinting to a lighter film it tested at 37%, but still looked dark because of an all black interior. A guy getting his Lexus tinted was pissed because his tint was too dark, but looked lighter than my car because of his white interior.

But tinting other windows is really a necessity in place like FL, TX and AZ. And think what OP is referring to is often called privacy glass, as that's all it does. Doesn't help keep heat out. |

That's all it is. Most people consider it a feature rather than a burden. For the record, I'm not a fan.

One of the first things I do when I buy a new car....... Tint the sides and the back! It does make a difference (Heat!). This time not too dark..... I got too many "Fix-it-tickets" with the last one. figured with this "fast baby" it will only get worse. (I now have the max. legal tint... I believe it's 35%).

Motorists across the country have to remove black films or any other material tampering with the original form of the safety glass. The bench said police officers should not only issue challans but also remove the black films from the offending vehicles.
