Once cars can reliably drive themselves it will probably be made illegal to drive one yourself or you will need a special license to do it.

Talking of flying cars, growing up I always had a thing for Jane Jetson.
Long legs and short skirts, mmmm. |

Safety and fuel efficiency will be the driving force that pushes autonomous cars. Look at how far our technology has come in the last 20 years alone.
The tech for this already exists for driving, gps guidance and accident anticipation and avoidance. It's going to come long before 2050. I take the long way home all the time just to drive. They'll have to pry the steering wheel from my cold, dead hands. |

It's probably 50/50 that cars will be driving themselves or we'll be driving carbureted vehicles through a nuclear wasteland.

We've come a long way from riding horses. I guess it'll sort of be the same. Driving yourself will only be done on a track as a luxury. Either way, gonna be old as balls by then. Also I would assume we'd be getting flying cars by then. Driving on the road will be as obsolete as rickshaws.

To essentially outlaw driving, the people have to support it. In a couple decades, I bet they will as a vast majority.
I wonder if the insurance companies will lobby against this. If we have smart cars that don't crash into anything, there will no longer be a need for auto insurance. I'll be we see this phenomenon in California by 2030 at the absolute latest. |

A world where you will always go the speed limit and actually stop at stop signs rather than yield....
Good thing they won't be able to automatize my motorcycle... or will they. |
