Selecting windows for new home

Have you guys had any experience with buying new windows?

I'm currently rebuilding my house and so far I've requested quotes for Pella Proline / Weather Shield Signature series / Jeld-Wen A-500 series / Andersen 400 series.

So far I've received quotes from Pella and Weather Shield and they were priced at $25k and $30k. My home is a modern home with a lot of oversized windows (more than 15' tall for some) and I was expecting little higher than normal but not this high.

Have you guys bought anyone of above and what's your thought?
I've read bad things about Pella for being aluminum spacer and creating condensation in winter that can be prone to rotting, but I'm sure that's not always the case as if it is, they will be out of the business and won't be regarded as a big names.

Please share your 2 cents.

What about Trimbo Windows?

I like to watch some shows on the DIY channel and several tv shows rave about Trimbo products.

I have Andersen windows in both of my homes, have always been happy with them, as well as the service when I had an issue with a few of them on really cold days having condensation form inside of the panes. No hassle from them after 1 phone call I had a guy coming to put in new windows in those spots.

I did JELD-WEN about 15 years ago, but I live in Cali so it doesn't ever rain, never mind get cold enough to worry about condensation between panes.

Condensation comes from environmental moisture entering a breach in the silicone or butyl seal between the aluminum spacer and the panes of glass in the insulated glass unit. It is more a glass manufacturing defect than a window manufacturer defect. Most window companies outsource their glass from the likes of PPG, LOF, Oldcastle etc. Warranty should cover this defect during the warranty period. Make sure you are clear on the warranty coverage and duration. And don't let them upsell you on Argon filled airspace. It offer very little benefit, and the Argon dissipates quickly.

All I know about home remodeling is you should be ready and willing to pay double the initial estimate.

Anderson from home depot are the best from what all the remodelers say. I have a few good friends in the business and only sell them because of how efficient they are.

milgard makes the best windows. the locking mechanisms are metal and can be opened with one hand (it is in the center). when they shut, they automatically lock (something i really value).

I would second Anderson and Pella. Easily the top two brands from when I worked construction material delivery oh so long ago.

I went to college in Pella as well, with the weather they get there I would doubt there would be cold weather issues!

In MA, average cost for replacement window with a contractor grade wondow (something like Harvey classics) is $400 installed, and for a full new construction is $500-650.

If you want higher end windows add additional $200-300.

Yes bigger sizes will cost more but $30k for windows?? LOL

Oh and for Anderson...they are just OK windows but they charge premium cuz of the advertising cost

Dont use home depot or lowes, go find a local contractor

$500~800 windows are really for average window for average size.
A lot of my windows are over 11' tall and they are raising my budget.

At the moment, it seems like Pella is the cheapest way to go. Andersen cannot even make windows for my sizes and others are quoting me over $30k.
This house rebuild is going to cost me a fortune..
