The video iPod touch screen may not be fiction, as I'm sure you're aware since you posted. Based on patents filed by Apple & associations with other companies, there is a strong rumor that the next gen iPod will be completely different. Supposedly it will be the same size, but the entire face will be a touch screen. It will still work the same way, and the "wheel" will still be present, but only via the touch screen. When a movie is played the wheel disappears & the movie fills the entire iPod.
The other rumor is that it will include some sort of wireless connectivity, be it WAN or Bluetooth, or both. But these are just rumors... as is everything else Apple.

If the next iPod is released as you described above, it gives me a reason to upgrade mine which I got more than three years ago. The third, fourth, fifth generation iPods didn't inspire me to upgrade, the basic functionality was the same. Music. I think the current video iPod is a joke with its tiny screen, but it does look prettier than mine! I would give one more year before Apple dumps it the way it did with the rainbow colored minis. |

That's pretty neat. I've seen other things that do that, but to have it all together as a function of software is cool. Reminds me a little of the movie Minority Report.

actually, someone already patented and came out with a prototype of a "floating display" kind of thing that looks a lot like the one in minority report but i think it can only display/move very simple objects like squares and rectangles. but hey, it is a beginning.
also, speaking of sci-fi, i read somewhere a few years ago that the famous star trek teleporting became a reality as well when a group of scientists achieved to transport a molecule from one place to another in laboratory conditions. now, that's crazy!
