One-millionth vehicle rolls off assembly line at BMW Shenyang plant

Munich/Shenyang.
Twelve years after the start of production of BMW cars back in 2003, the Chinese production site in Shenyang has reached an impressive milestone: At the newest plant at the production site, Tiexi, the one-millionth vehicle produced in China has rolled off the assembly line earlier today. The anniversary vehicle is a BMW 3 Series Sedan long version; the model has been produced exclusively for the Chinese market since 2012.

Harald Krüger, member of the Management Board of BMW AG responsible for production, commented on the occasion of the anniversary from his Munich office: “For more than ten years now, our joint venture has been very successful at producing BMW models in China. The production site in Shenyang with its two vehicle plants Tiexi and Dadong as well as the adjacent engine plant is thus a vital element of our global production network. We are striving for further balanced and profitable growth in the three world regions, Europe, America and Asia. This is why in China as well as in other countries, we focus on the principle of ‘production follows the market’.”

BMW cars have been built at a plant in Shenyang in Northeastern China since 2004; the site is operated by a joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited and solely caters to the Chinese market. Today, the production site in Shenyang comprises the Dadong plant in Northeastern Shenyang, where the BMW 5 Series long version is built, and also a new plant in Tiexi in West Shenyang in the Chinese province of Liaoning, which went on stream in 2012. Tiexi has set new standards when it comes to a sustainable and resource-efficient production. The Tiexi plant produces the BMW X1, BMW 3 Series long version, BMW 3 Series Sedan and ZINORO cars. The high quality level of the vehicles produced in Shenyang is frequently confirmed by independent organizations.

The two vehicle plants, Dadong and Tiexi, have a combined maximum production output of 300,000 units annually, which is going to be increased to 400,000 units annually over the next two years. Over the course of the next few years, the BMW Group is going to expand the portfolio of locally produced vehicle models from currently three to then six.

Another part of the Shenyang site is a stand-alone engine plant (Powertrain). It provides the two vehicle plants Dadong and Tiexi with drive systems for the BMW cars produced at these factories. A larger second engine plant that also comprises a foundry (New Engine Plant) is currently under construction; it is scheduled to start operations in 2016.

Founded in 2003, the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive produces and distributes BMW cars in China and carries out local development tasks. In the past five years, the BMW Group has invested a total of two billion euros in the Chinese production site. The joint venture employs a workforce of over 14,000 people. In 2014, four years before the end of the contract period, the BMW Group and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited extended their contract for the Chinese joint venture, thus providing the foundation for strengthening the successful existing cooperation even further. The new agreement has a term of ten years, from 2018 to 2028.

Not really good news since BMW just shipped $68 million off to their Chinese dealers to bail them out, car sales have really slowed down.

Wow i'd be all over a long wheelbase 3 series if they sold it here in the US! I'm 6'7" and even kids cannot sit behind me in the current 3 series. They barely fit behind me in my F10 M5! It looks great too.

The VW built in China is based on a different standard, they so called laser welding technology is just spot welling with gap left between panels, and the Chinese made VW Jetta's has torsion bar suspension at rear and it can snap anytime, the recall plan they came up with is just by adding two metal plate on that 1mm think suspension structure, what a joke, they also got problems with DSG transmission too, VW has no respect to the Chinese market, they only want money from Chinese people's pocket, the BMW other wise, at least their cars in China was built at same standard.

if he said “way much poor” i guess maybe he was out of luck or dont know what he was talking about.
I own 2012 x1 20i made in Shengyang, entire car provides exactly the same bmw quality standard as cars from US, in 3 years never give me a single issue.

Interesting comment, I had personally inspected similar bimmers build in Germany and China perviously, not that much difference from what I see. and only the chinese market offers the extended version as well.

Only because the labor is cheaper does not mean the quality is lower, especially in the BMW standard.

funny part is? my US build 2008 X5 had gave me nothing but trouble.

The build quality on 3-series cars is poorer than ever, and it was never very impressive.

What surprises me is that Chinese people get the long version of a sedan.

Why does almost every other thing that comes from China suck then? Toxic components, lowest bid manufacturing, almost zero product life longevity...

They don't import Chinese made BMWs to North America.

Certain ppl just seem to have lots of hate to the Chinese products, and yet when they see a good quality product made in china they keeps their mouth shut. too many ppl have had their brain washed by their gov for the hates on other countries.

keep in mind whoever imported garbage products into your country should be reliable, they go out bid for the lowest cost and make the highest profit from their own ppl, and yet it is always easy to blame others while ignoring the facts on their own side.

There are many quality products made in China, and the price is still cheaper than other places, but some ppl just want everything for nothing, then you get nothing.
