BMW to celebrate centenary with autonomous concept
"BMW has hinted an autonomous concept will be revealed this year as part of the company?s centenary celebrations.
The ultimate driving machine is about to lose its steering wheel as BMW?s head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson, has hinted an autonomous concept is being prepared for this year. It will be a part of the company?s 100th anniversary celebrations and will provide a glimpse of what?s up ahead for the Bavarian marque. Robertson said during a briefing in London the industry has passed the ?feet off phase of autonomy? and is currently now in the ?hands off and eyes off phase.? This current stage will last only for a brief period and will be succeeded by ?brain off.? He went on to specify that even though this technology could be ready in about 10 years from now, other factors that need to be considered could cause a five-year delay. One such factor named by Robertson was moral dilemma. He imagined a situation in which a truck is about to hit a car. In this case, the autonomous vehicle can decide to swerve out of the way and possibly hit another car or a pedestrian and this could kill someone. There?s also the possibility the computers decide not to take any actions to avoid the impact. Such problems will have to be sorted out before the technology will be ready for production cars. Details about the concept due to be shown later this year are not available at this point, but Robertson said it will be joined by other ?products.? One can assume he was referring to production cars that will be available for purchase."
