The helmet HUD units out there while great on paper doesn't really translate well for real world use. The main reason is you're paying a big chunk of change for something which looks like it is fully integrated into the helmet. While this may seem like a great idea, it isn't unless you're able to remove the equipment and at least use it in another helmet from the same manufacturer sans the HUD equipment. And why this is an issue is because all helmets have a service life. Doesn't matter if the helmet has never seen any impacts.

Also, there's the issue of that display unit behind the face shield. I'd like to really see if the DOT or Snell will certify an object which can break off depending on the impact and become an impaling device to one's face.

I actually bought what I'm pretty sure was the first "HUD" type unit for motorcycle helmets. It was called the Sportvue MC1.

I have the system installed on my ZX-10R. From a safety standpoint, it was good as the device sits outside of the helmet preventing it from being projectile inside the helmet. It also allows one to transfer it to any helmet. The downside with this system was the 2.4 GHz RF was spotting depending on where I rode. The initial setup was also a bit interesting and can cause some people to be a bit scared of doing the learning procedure. The company was supposed to release a newer version called the MC2 but I don't think that ever saw the light of day. And I think the company is no more.

MY2017, look for it late this year. i3 and i8 will get face lifted and I predict the spyder will join the duo. Hopefully the i8 will get a better battery with more AER so the range queens will quit screaming about it being so low.
