I'm jealous of your speeds, where I live I have a shitty microwave link that suppose to be 5Mbps, that I maybe get 1Mbps out of. The house isn't wired for cable unfortunately, and the DSL service is by Centurylink at 3Mbps for more money than the microwave service.
On that same note, I dropped cable years ago. I don't really watch TV so I don't really need it. |

I pay ~$80 for cox internet. That's 120ish down and about 10 up. I used to have their full cable package too, but after they raised the price by nearly 100% when my "promotion period" was up, I decided to drop the cable. At first I thought I'd be missing a lot of stuff, but as it turns out netflix, hulu, and sling.tv cover all I need.
I recommend taking the dive and cutting out phone/cable. Worst case you could get it re-instated!

Last year I had Verizon fios with a mid-level cable package and decent internet (Ultimate package, 75mbps up down). It was 185 per month, way too high and driving me crazy
Redid the package back in December. Got a similar cable package, bumped up to 100 Mbps up/down (some bundle ''deal'). The first month was 115 (not too bad) but then somehow it went up to $154, wtf I'm at the end. I'm researching ways to get rid of cable all together but don't know enough about other options yet. I dont want to have to open widgets/apps/etc. I want to set it on the news or sports or get lit and watch animal channels, pretty simple, same damn 10 channels all the time, but not for 150+ per month |

My cable company (spectrum) raised my rate as a result of being a loyal customer so I cancelled and used my hot spot on my phone. The customer rep said I could sign up under a new name so I didn't have to wait 60 days to get the promotional rate. So I'm pretending that I'm not me and someone else is living in my place. I also called Direct TV to get a discount without having to sign another contract and I pay about the same as contract customers with some added packages like HBO.

Nice thing that I recently discovered was that they are streaming 4K stuff now. Netflix can do that but for another 2 bucks. Choices are not that great yet but its basically "free"...and if you have sets that can do that.... |

I'm at $140/mo. with TWC (Spectrum) for their mid tier TV plus the Sports Package, that costs extra, for NFL Network , a phone I don't need at all but actually makes the total cost cheaper the way they bundle it, and 250 Mbps Internet. I had the cord cut from 2011-2014. I moved into a complex that required cable as part of rent, so I got used to having the Sports channels again (ESPN, NFL Network, NBC Sports, etc.). I decided to take it with me to my current residence. It could be so much worse than that. If I had to have cable boxes for all 6 TV's, I would be paying SO much more. My HD Homerun Prime saves me a ton. Truth is that I am really only heavy into NFL and given that the Mon. and Thurs. night games are such garbage these days, I am starting to think I could cut it again and just deal with a low quality stream for the few Mon. and even fewer Thurs. night games I actually wanna watch that I can't get. Over half the games on Thurs. nights are being broadcast on a major network available OTA or a HQ stream from Yahoo, Twitter, etc. these days. As for the NHL, NBA, PGA Tour, etc. the games that matter (championships and major tournaments) to me are usually boradcast on an network available OTA and I couldn't care less about anything NCAA. I don't even need Amazon, Netflix, Hulu etc. as I get my TV and movies from "other" sources. Hell, I don't need the 250 Mbps bandwidth teir either to do what I need to do. Yeah, I really need to consider cutting cable again...

I just wish the ISPs would cut the crap about only focusing on download speeds. I wish all providers would provide symmetrical speeds. To me the upload speeds are equally as important as download as I host a bunch of apps/services from my home network. And if you don't care about upload speeds now, you will with all the move to cloud based solutions especially if you do backups and file syncs to cloud services.

thanks alamat and obert.. the parents are fed up with high cable prices as just as OP and want to go the streaming route. just trying to figure it all out to see if it can work out for them.
this may or may not be a dumb question, I have amazon prime, but do I need a separate prime account for television? |

When I was single and living alone, I had cable internet (COX) only - $70/month. Now I'm married, and wife insists on cable tv. So the bundle (with landline, cause otherwise we would pay more) is $165/month - still with COX. And ya, I hate their nonsense of price creeping and having to call once a year to apply a new promo. I suppose enough people ignore it that it's worth their efforts to play those games.
Since we have it, I do watch cable, but man I wish she would get on board with cutting it out. Can't stand supporting these bullshit companies, and we really only watch a few channels. |
