First time visiting carmax to get my FJ appraised. While waiting I cruised their lot and was surprised to see a 2015 alpina b6 with 22k miles and a gt350 with only 1000 miles. Kinda makes me wanna check out what's on the lot at a carmax in a more affluent area. Btw all the doors of the cars on the lot are unlocked so it's like going to an auto show. Good times.

Carmax is great if you are open to different brands or just surveying a certain type of vehicle vs going a specific dealer and only seeing their cars. It’s nice to be able to compare an F150 and Sierra or Grand Cherokee and Land Rover side by side for example. You really cannot do that anywhere else particular since most independent dealers have much less inventory.

My gripes with Carmax are that they no longer prep cars like they used to and they sell damaged cars even though they claim not to. When I bought a vehicle from them it was like my car was CPO-like. Now you can see cars that need to be severely detailed inside and out.

Funny, I got an appraisal on my Cayman when I was trading it in last year. They had an F-type on the lot and I asked if I could see it. They just let me see it, didn't offer a test drive. Like I'm really going to buy an expensive car from them without driving it.

some guys on the Porsche forum have gotten great deals on highly optioned cars from carmax. A lot of the porsche options aren't included in the bluebook models, so they are kind of like getting them for free as carmax doesn't price them in.

I also noticed that the cars didn't seem like they were detailed very well. It was interesting that every car also had their own individual smells from previous owners.

I've bought over 10 cars from carmax. Yes they need to be detailed but then again I'm just OCD with cleaning anyways so no big deal. I've never had one problem with any of my cars and actually never paid over book since most of them were bought out of state and shipped to me. I bought my current 135i from them as well. Shipped from Texas to me in Chicago.

I bought my 335i from carmax, it was 3 years old and half the price of a new one. Also bought the extended warranty from them and I used it it a few times. The warranty was well worth it, I got my money back on that deal and they took care of everything.

They probably have the best aftermarket service plans available. I bought my '07 e90 from them for 30K in 2011, paid 1600 for 6 years and 75K miles worth of warranty. I sold the car two weeks ago and went through all the service receipts. IT PAID OUT OVER $9,000! No questions asked, no dicking you around, they paid for everything. And it was tuned the whole time.

I will attest to this as well. I didn't buy the extended warranty but even their 30 day warranty is fantastic. A few days after I purchased my 135i, I noticed the brakes were squealing, 3rd brake light cracked, charge pipe cracked, all replaced by them. they replaced all the rotors all around and all new pads. cant beat that customer service. wasn't expecting that at all.

Carmax has a great inventory. We offer some nice vehicles as well and a killer search app. Check us out:

https://www.autolist.com/bmw-m4#make...03079630000002

Good place to search if you can't find anything in the classifieds here.

Bought my 2012 E92 exactly 2 months ago from Carmax as well. Got it transferred from IL to CA and car was in good condition. Bought the 5 year warranty for $3K through them as well so I am covered for any expensive fixes that come down the road. Was in and out within 1.5 hours, quickest car purchase I have ever done.

I've purchased two cars from them in the past 14 months, a CTS coupe with their warranty which has already paid for itself and recently a Fiat 500 Sport for my stepdaughter but turned down the warranty as we have another year of the factory warranty. I agree that they don't clean the cars thoroughly but that's what us owners/car enthusiasts come in and do it the right way.

Two things I wish they could improve on:

1) Let us take longer test drives. We need to drive on side roads and highway speeds to get an overall feel of the vehicle(s). Making 4 left turns isn't enough.

2) Allow 3rd party inspections as it seems things are missed during their 'Carmax Certified Inspection' process.

Dude, I've never been to a Carmax where the cars were not complete shit... I think the people that trade these cars in can't afford them most of the time and are looking for a place to dump them.

I literally saw luxury cars with 5-10k miles that look worse than my former 9 year old 135i.
