It done blowed up

Wifey's Kindle as she found it this morning. She hasn't used it in over a month. Wasn't charging or anything. It was just sitting on her desk last night and this is how she found it this morning. No smell in the house, so it didn't get hot. Still, nasty looking battery.

The edge of a Kindle reader cracked open by a swollen battery.

Rod bearings? jk. That same sort of thing happened to an older macbook pro I had replaced the battery on, and considering the price of those batteries, it just wan't worth it to me anymore. Too bad these batteries are usually the weak links in many electronic systems.

This is why they are considering rules banning certain types of batteries in checked luggage on airplanes. LiIon batteries can be nasty things in a closed environment.

Should be interesting when the batteries in all those nasty EVs start exploding after a few years of use

People need to be aware of this new breed of battery called LiPo, short for Lithium Polymer. They will ignite when punctured and they do not like to be excessively discharged. You should NEVER leave a Lipo battery completely depleted for a long period of time else this happens. Even if you don't use the device, top off the battery every couple weeks to keep it healthy. You should get rid of that thing immediately.

Lithium Ion batteries will not bloat when left depleted.

We surely have them in the 'Nard. Just this morning I was un-Christianly giggling at these 2 kids I saw standing at the bus stop, the same stop that all the other kids wait at. Then the short bus came around the corner and they started fidgeting happily.

(That will cost me a few rides in the Purgatory short-bus, but is worth it)

Thanks. Getting rid of it properly out here in corn country is easier said than done. No one in our area takes such devices or batteries. The nearest place might be Staples or Best Buy about an hour north of here. But we'll make that trip this coming weekend.

Wow crazy, thanks for that info. Serious question, though, aside from obvious damage to the equipment because of the expansion when the battery goes off like that, is it also a fire hazard?

I learned to deal with LiPo in the RC world. Those batteries have higher voltage and capacity than those in mobile devices. We use fireproof bags when charging RC batteries, that's how dangerous they are. I'm sure mobile device batteries are not as dangerous but I'm still cautious when I see LiPo.
