TV contracts. Specifically, $3B in the case of Anaheim which happens to be in the second largest market. It's a good reason why the likes of Tampa/Oakland/Kansas City, etc are almost never in the running for mega free agent deals.

Those teams have money. The owners decide to pocket it and try the money ball equation. However, as we all know, having the largest payroll doesn’t guarantee a WS trophy, let alone playoffs. Yankees have changed their approach and are concentrating on the younger players they have and I’m so glad they didn’t get Harper/Manny ‘Johnny Hustle’ Machado.

Mookie Betts, bye, bye. Along with Sale. If Judge has a couple of all star caliber seasons, I can’t imagine his contract. The way MLB contracts are going, there’s going to be a billion dollar player. I could definitely see a strike looming in a couple of years. And I could honestly say, I don’t really care. And I love the game of baseball. Enough, is enough. I’m not blaming the players for taking the money that’s offered, I blame ownership.

As crazy as it might sound, Sox should probably trade Mookie sooner rather than later. He has already stated he has no intention to sign an extension before he makes it to free agency in a couple of years. Time to re-stock farm system with affordable talent after promoting guys and trading many away for Sale and Kimbrel. I think they have a better chance to extend Sale and Martinez than Betts.

Looks like Sale getting extended for 5/145 according to reports on Bleacher Report.

6 years, $160m for Sale. I can’t believe the contracts teams are giving these pitchers. I guess TB got a discount on Snell.

Sale was still under contract for 1/15 so the extension of 5/145 + remaining year = 6/160. To me a top pitcher is worth more than a top outfielder (with Trout the only potential exception). The market has been set for dollars I guess. At least they kept the extension to 5 years. Hopefully he stays healthy and dominant but we'll see.

Snell and Severino are bargains because their teams convinced them to sign contracts for financial security before they needed to do so, buying out arbitration years. Some guys are willing to do that to avoid risk of injury and can still get a big payday when the contract is over. They will be set for life with their bargains even if they get hurt or fizzle out though.

Xander Bogaerts close to extending for 6/120 after this year @ 12, for a total of 7/132. Reportedly an opt out after 3 years.
