Wax is not going to protect your car from chipping.
In Seattle, we do not use salt during winter but instead city uses sand. Once ice goes away, your car literally gets sand blasted on the freeway. I get PPF done on all of my cars bec I am a perfectionist and chips bug the heck out of me. The cars that I own get the high-end seamless stuff (DYNOshield) while leased cars get the regular computer cut stuff. It keeps me sane and that's all I care Here is my F10 after 3 years 30K miles still looking brand new. In comparison, the windshield is pitted pretty bad.

Wax will help by reducing the friction between debris and your car. If you keep a nice coat on it it will absolutely help.
