When do you think BMW will offer one? I don't think is a matter of "if" but "when". For the record I love the CVT's in my '18 and '19 Subarus.

Hopefully never. In 2019, the rise of 8/9/10 speed traditional torque converter transmissions and quality DCTs, there's no reason to develop a CVT as we move towards electrification anyways.

I am reasonably confident they will never introduce a vehicle with a CVT.

German manufacturers are moving at a fairly rapid pace toward an all-electric future. In the meantime, they will make do with iterative refinements to the engines and transmissions that they are using today.

Remember that the majority of EVs do not have multi-speed transmissions. And even for those that do have more than one gear ratio, there is no compelling need for infinite variability with an electric motor. Furthermore a CVT is not a good match for an EV application due their limited ability to handle high torque input while electric motors tend to make high torque from zero RPM.

This is why I wish there was a thumbs down to posts instead of just "appreciate". Gobsmacked that anyone who has ever owned or driven a BMW thinks that CVTs are a good idea, let alone "loves" them.

No I will still buy a BMW X3 No matter.. Not looking for an argument but I bet no one here has driven say a Forester CVT. It has 2 agressive setting for the CVT. They are not "Fake" but preset shift points. You actually see the preset point. In there you floor it and it goes right to red line and thereafter shifts up at 700 rpm below red line. Its a good system.

I think though that EV's won't sell in the US for the next 15 years (Including BMW)..obviously I could be wrong.

A statement worded like that sounds like the very opposite of "not looking for an argument".

Your perception of this forum and its members appears to be skewed. I think that if you spend some more quality time outside of the off-topic and political forums, you'd find that there is a large contingent of our users that are very knowledgeable about other automakers and the auto industry at large, and we have experience with many different brands of vehicles.

We're not having that discussion again, especially not in this thread.

At any rate, as I already said, investments into ICE technologies will be minimal from here on out. A CVT is not likely to be seen by BMW leadership and decision makers as a good place to spend money to hit future revenue targets.
