I wonder whats going to happen.

On the one side you read that Nico Rosberg has volunteered to drive the tesla at the nordschleife:
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-mode...erg-elon-musk/
https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/08...-musk-accepts/

And on the other side you read of reports that they didn't even booked tracktime at the ring (or at least, officials seem to know of nothing):
https://www.motor1.com/news/369441/t...ng-track-test/

Tesla.... always good for a soap story

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla just straight up didn't know that they require special booked time to have the track to yourself, and very special time slots to do a record attempt.

Here's what is up now:

Quote:
On Saturday, Sept. 7, a Tesla spokesperson provided Road & Track with the following statement: "Tesla is excited to be a part at the Industry Pool testing community next week at the Nürburgring. Our participation is confirmed and contracted by the Nürburgring."

"Industry Pool" is the name for the Nürburgring's open-lapping test sessions reserved exclusively for automakers and auto industry suppliers. You've likely seen spy photos or videos from Industry Pool sessions—this is where automakers and suppliers test and tune their prototype vehicles on the 'Ring. Lap timing is prohibited during Industry Pool sessions—there's often heavy traffic, with everything from supercars to SUVs, and while drivers can occasionally run a fast segment when traffic allows, it's impossible (and against the rules) to run a complete lap at full speed during Industry Pool.
So it sounds like Elon was speaking out of the wrong orifice once again.

So they're going to drive around at speeds that the model S is actually designed for, and complete the full lap

Have they told Nico yet?

I think it is a smart move by Lord Musk. Basically the Model S will puttle around with other industry pool cars and claim they are able to keep up or beat other mfg cars. Knowing full well a Model S will go into limp mode half way if driven at max V.

Musk did not tweet about beating Taycan. He just say Model S will be at Nurburgring next week. Tesla marketing juggernaut will no doubt be at full spin mode.

What's the point in comparing the Taycan to the Model S?

Latest I saw was a car near the ring with Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires that looked wider. There was also mention from Musk that a new "Plaid" (spaceballs reference) version of the model S is upcoming (about a year out). That one has a triple motor design instead of the dual on the current performance version of the Model S.

Rosberg driving whatever car at full beans would be interesting to see, even if on a Tourist day. should give a good sense of the capabilities of the car.

What do we think the brakes would do? I'm not very familiar with any aspects of how the Tesla brakes with all that weight perform.

I would imagine it takes quite a while for race driver get used to regen breaking? Or if it's a track more "hard" break so doesn't really matter as much

Elon noting on twitter the Model S at the Ring has 7 seats.

That is their out if they can't break the Taycan record. Elon will claim fastest 7 seater around the ring.

Touristenfahrten days are an absolute shit show, so it's unlikely anyone would waste their time.

The same car you mentioned is fitted with carbon ceramics so I'm sure they'll hold up just fine. Either way, the ring is not a very brake-intensive track compared to others (Laguna, for example).

I saw on top gear where the dual motor 3 spanked all of the four-door cars on their track, the M3 and the Alfa Romeo. Didn't look pretty but was faster

I did see that but if I recall correctly they weren't on a near 13 mile track, which in previous attempts has cooked the Tesla batteries.

Agreed. Even with modifications, there's absolutely no way they can get close to the Taycan's time.

That video made me cringe so much....
That guy may be a racing driver but there is absolutely no objectivity or relativity in comparison.
His video is about wheter Nordschleife lap times are objective, and 1 thing he says is that there is no official party involved in judging the performance set.
But here's the thing: I've never seen any performance measurements in a car brochure that did have that. So yes it would be better if there was such a thing but there isnt.... on ANY performance data provided by car manufacturers.
And also regarding the weather or conditions: most runs have video footage, and a date, so one can see for themselves.
And I doubt a rollcage will give significant different times on a track like the Nordschleife in cars where it really matters. In theory it can make the body stiffer, but it also adds weight.
The modifications from OEM are usually listed, main point of course being tyres. Without that data, lap time data becomes incredible by the audience, and car manufactureres know that.
And again, pretty much all he says also goes for any other performance data that is used to compare cars. He doesn't describe a system that would give a good comparison that is still somewhat of a measure for what the car is intended to do (they use the nordschleife as it is way more a track that mimics a road than a normal track, also something he forgets to highlight....)
Yes it's not a perfect system, but then again, what is?
