i know what you're saying about moving out. i guess we're never happy where we are. but i'm sure i could be happiER in SD than i am in pittsburgh. i'm really surprised, however, you couldn't find a major you want at one of the UC schools. i can't wait to see what you're gonna be saying 2-3 months after you move to the east coast once it's starts being completely shitty and miserable out hey, maybe you'll like it...i sure don't.

Poway is pretty far inland. You'll be driving a whopping 45 minutes to UCSD in the mornings, depending on traffic. And going home from UCSD - expect upwards to nearly 1-1.5 hours of driving/stop-n-go. The I-5 and 56 are the MOST congested freeways in the county after work. On a rainy day, you'll be driving 1.5 hours *for sure* going home from UCSD...because Californians don't know how to drive worth a damn. They need to enforce a chains-on rule on rainy days for these pathetic bastards (while people on the East Coast don't even wear chains during 24" blizzards! )

Poway actually has quite a bit of new construction/development going on - the community is pretty new and the area looks really nice - probably second only to the fancies of La Jolla. But, as it is farther inland, you'll feel the heat bearing down on you during the summer days (and the cold at night) relative to places near the ocean like Carlsbad, Del Mar, Oceanside, La Jolla, etc. Poway will give you a pretty good deal in apartments though - as their apartments are rather new and Poway isn't a heavily desired location.

EDIT: If La Jolla is too pricey for you, I highly recommend living in the Sorrento area - it's snuggled between Del Mar and La Jolla and rests only a tiny bit further to the east but not by much.

I had a buddy who moved out to the Sorrento area and he saved probably a hundred or two a month off of rent, but he actually regrets moving to Sorrento because it's quite a 'dead' location with not much going on regarding choices of food/restaurants, night-life, proximity to other hot spots (downtown, parks, nice beaches, etc.)

well, i first need to find a job i haven't really looked at pricing anywhere since i'm just assuming i'm not going to find a decent place in any SD area for cheaper than $1k/month for a 1-bedroom apt.

For being at UCSD, I'd definitely recommend avoiding Poway. Like squawks said, it's just too far. From a less pragmatic point-of-view, however, I'd recommend avoiding Poway just cuz it's gross. It used to be a fairly remote part of SD and was pretty hicky accordingly. Although being absorbed by an expanding SD, it's remained just as hicky. There are some nice areas I suppose, but in my humble estimation, ew.


continuing the 'like squawks said' motif, I'd recommend the Sorrento area, too. It's in a good spot between the La Jolla area and Del Mar and all and it's not so bad price and neighborhood wise....in my humble estimation again

Yes im shooting for this fall. I already turned in my housing application but i havent heard back. Hmm i should call them. Anyway, im leaving on wednesday with my pops. We're coming out to nyc and check things out again.
