Death of the DVD/HD-DVD

With all the fightings between Sony and Toshiba finally coming to the end, it is ironic that DVD/HD-DVD will both lose out to someone else. Sounds familiar?!? History does repeat itself.

Yeah but Sony doesn't allow porn on their media. That's why the VHS won out over 20 years ago.

I don't care about BluRay or HDDVD. DVD's are fine for me.

One issue though, HD doesn't yet have the bandwidth to compare picture quality to BD or DVD upscale during fast action etc.

Exactly. It'll be a while before there's enough capacity to be streaming 1080p content everywhere, on demand. The current compression technology and distribution isn't there yet. I think its more like 7-10 years away. Think about the infrastructure that will be needed to transmit the type of high definition data that is on a BD.

not only that.. think of the disk space it would need

at a point I looked into the whole "put your DVDs on a PC" for quick access
instead of getting up, going to my DVD collection, finding them, going back, etc..
I'd just buy a PC, plug it into my TV, and use that...

I filled up a 500GB HDD and only put 1/4 of my DVDs on it...
it wasnt practical... so I decided to stick to my DVD player...
