You should see Infiniti. So many great concepts that never saw the light of day.

Q50 Eau Rogue, with a GT-R engine stuffed under the hood, and Q60 Project Black S with F1-inspired technology. Both M3/4 competitors sadly never made it to production. And then the countless other visions that were "supposed to" represent Infiniti's future (which is very bleak).

My guess is that this will influence or preview of the next gen RX and RX e. Or it could be an electric coupe version of a 6th gen RX, or an entirely all new model altogether. The 4th gen AL20 RX is approaching the typical 5 year life cycle.

The side profile kind of gives off a modern RX vibe imo.

I like it. Minimalist, sleek sharp lines, there's a flow to the design. The Spindle grille is no longer a grille but has morphed into an outline of the spindle, it's a nice look.

This contrasts with the BMW iX with the fugly beaver face grille. I still don't get it, other EV's like Tesla, Taycan, Mustang Mach-E and now this Lexus have evolved away from grilles because they don't need it, but yet BMW is still trying to push them down our throats.

New Patent Shows Toyota and Subaru Partnering for EV Sedan

Many colleagues in the press were furious because they fell for Volkswagen’s April Fool’s prank. Some want these jokes to be banished forever, but that would give us one less opportunity to have fun. When the GR86 Forum revealed patent documents published on April 1st about an electric sedan developed by Toyota and Subaru, we were almost sure that was a joke. A quick search at the USPTO (US Patent & Trade Office) confirmed they are real.

The date was not the only suspicious thing about the documents. They also showed a body style in which very few manufacturers are betting. Apart from China, sedans are not that popular elsewhere. On the other hand, it is a body style that makes perfect sense for electric cars due to their optimal aerodynamic properties.



As the forum member apex wittily points out, the truth is that the document does not speak about a sedan. He found a sequence of five documents that seem to be related to the same vehicle: 20210094622, 20210094623, 20210094624, 20210094625, and 20210094626. They all have Toyota and Subaru as the applicants.

The patent applications 20210094625 and 20210094626 specifically refer to the “body of an electric vehicle.” The 20210094622 document mentions an “electric vehicle.” The other two, 20210094623 and 20210094624, describe respectively the “body of vehicle” and the “vehicle body lower structure.” These last papers give us the impression that these structures could be used for combustion-engined cars as well.

That reinforces apex’s thesis that these patent applications may be related to the e-TNGA, a modular platform that Toyota will use for its electric cars. He posted that among discussions about whether the joint reveal planned by Toyota and Subaru for April 5 will be for the new GR86 or an electric vehicle.



Both hypotheses are strong. Toyota and Subaru have jointly developed the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ in the past. The new sports car, which Toyota will rename as GR86 (for Gazoo Racing), is expected by 2021. At the same time, Toyota and Subaru will also develop EVs together. Making these electric cars fun to drive is something that worked really well for Tesla, hence the Gazoo Racing involvement with them.

The good news is that it will take just a few days to learn what the April 5 joint announcement will reveal. If they do not disclose electric vehicle plans, the patent applications may shed more light on them. We’ll read them carefully, and you are more than invited to do the same.

Toyota Electric SUV Shows Its Face Ahead Of April 19 Debut

Toyota and Subaru originally announced plans to collaborate on a dedicated platform for electric vehicles back in June 2019. The first fruit of their labor is a week away from being officially unveiled as the Auto Shanghai show in China will see the world premiere of a fully electric SUV. We're going to discover Toyota's version first, with a Subaru equivalent reportedly called "Evoltis" likely not far behind.



Likely to be part of Toyota's "Beyond Zero" sub-brand for all things electric, the zero-emissions SUV is showing off its face with a blue corporate badge signaling its eco-friendly nature. The lack of a conventional front grille is also a sign there's no combustion engine underneath the hood. There is a lower grille and could serve a functional purpose by cooling down the EV-related bits and bobs, while the upper panel appears to have a closed-off design.

Previously described as being "very European in the DNA and design," Toyota's new electric SUV will ride on the e-TNGA platform and is expected to compete in the midsize segment. It's worth mentioning the vehicle coming to Auto Shanghai won't be a production model as the teaser image here actually depicts a concept.



It remains to be seen how close it will be to the road-going model, which will be the first of six bespoke Toyota BEVs coming this decade. There are plans for a small compact vehicle co-developed with Suzuki / Daihatsu, along with a midsize crossover, minivan, and sedan models as well as a large SUV. These will get fresh names unrelated to existing vehicles to further signal they're part of a new breed of green models.


Following the concept's debut next week, the production model will go on sale in Europe "in a couple of years," according to a statement made by Toyota Europe's sales and marketing chief, Matt Harrison, in an interview with Automotive News Europe in December 2020. Details about the EV are shrouded in mystery, but we do know the e-TNGA platform is being engineered to accommodate front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive setups as well as different types of electric motors and battery packs (from 50 kWh to 100 kWh).



Due to be built in Japan, the RAV4-sized SUV will lead the way for a new family of electric vehicles, joining the second-generation Mirai fuel cell hydrogen sedan, Lexus UX 300e, and the battery-powered Proace van.
