There is research that was done in NYC where cats fall from buildings and there is example of cats surviving falls up to 32 floors. However, there a range of floors where cats do not survive, it's something like 15 to 20 floors cars die. They said at lower floors their fall speed it's not that great so they do not get hurt, but as the speed increases and they still accelerating the cat can not judge the landing but at 20th floor the cat terminal velocity they are no longer accelerating so they can judge the landing.

Okay, who in the hell conducted that research?!?
I have a feeling this is just BS and/or you're pulling our leg.

i think it is just self reported by owners. or data from vet clinics. cats jump off shit all the time. mine would routinely jump off the back of my second floor balcony. eventually i just let him out to roam the neighborhood when he wants.

Wish I had a link. I saw a video or research once of how cats when falling spread their legs and slow their speed of descent and can survive massively high falls. Doesn't always work and many have broken ribs ot other internal injuries but some make it.

Man that's just crazy and I hope it wasn't a controlled study if you know what I mean. That would be just plain cruelty.

Agreed. Pretty sure the study I saw did not throw cats out of a window.

PS - serious cat lover here. Got four and deeply sad watching one fade away with lung cancer right now.

If it was done that way, whomever responsible for tossing the cats out a window would need to go next!

I'm really sorry to hear about your cat man, that's rough. It's always painful to deal with a dying pet but it will know you're there for them until the end and that's what's important IMO. They won't feel alone.

Thanks. Poor little guy lost a leg 3 years ago to cancer and now he is too weak to use the one rear leg left to walk much. Kinda drags himself along.

On a brighter note since we live in the Sonoran desert which has a lot of things that would love to eat a cat all our cats are house cats only. But since he can not run away from us or get used to the idea of going out we have been taking him out to hear and smell the outside world and he seems to really dig it. Trying to make his last few weeks good ones.

Yeah, no one did a controlled study, it was documented cases of actual cats who either fell or jumped from various height in NYC and found that cat that fell between different height either had no injuries or had serious injuries or died. Someone analysis this and kinda figured out what happen. They said that cats can not accurate judge the landing if they are still accelerating at high speed.

Here is a article that talked about the study that was done, I got one height wrong it was around 7 stories where cats had more injuries then at some point above this the cat is fine. I could not find the original study.

Interesting study. That explains why my cats seem stupid with regard to heights

Kind of weird how the cat looks like it turns into a stuffed animal bouncing as it lands.

Haha, yeah. But then after sticking the perfect landing, it walked away like a boss just as the title stated.

apparently the record holder is a cat that fell 46 stories and no injury. landed on a canopy first though and bounced off. still impressive.

and squirrels can't die from falls. they can survive impacts at their terminal velocity.

I think that bounce was a little flex to help lesson the fall. Cats are great natural athletes.
