Questions to ask Detailer for Ceramic

I'm planning to start calling around to get quotes on applying ceramic to my G80 that's arriving in about a week. I know next to nothing about ceramic coating brands and what prep work should be done. What questions should I ask the detailers I call as to what they plan to do for the price they're quoting? What prep work should I be expecting?

Most pros are certified installers for their products of choice. CarPro, Gyeon, Ceramic Pro etc… Generally most start with some form of inspection to examine the condition of the paint. Depending on what your desires are and the condition of the paint as it pertains to any present defects, they will likely perform a wash, decon and a 1 or 2 stage paint correction. Followed by the application of the coating. Depending on the coating and amount of correction will generate the price for the service. Usually add ons offered include coating the wheels and interior leathers etc…

Thanks. Do you recommend getting the wheels done? I've got the snowflake 826m. Will it make cleaning a lot easier?

Yes cleaning will be easier. I would much rather clean coated wheels than non-coated wheels for sure! The coating doesn't really keep them any cleaner but does help all the brake dust not adhere as drastically.

Do they typically coat the wheels? Should I ask (if this is something that is done)? I was hoping if they coated the wheels it would help in keeping them clean (or easier to clean).

Yes most detailers will coat the wheels as an add on package. Sometimes you have to specify whether you want just the wheel faces coated or a full wheels off coating. With the wheels off, they also coat the inner barrels and brake calipers typically.

Not to hijack this thread, but is there any possible scenario where only waiting 3-5 days to wash the car after getting it coated would suffice?

The recommending waiting period I keep seeing online is about 10-15 days but the shop that applied my coating has advised me to wash it after 3-5 days.

(Figured I would ask this here since it would also be a good thing to ask your detailer before coating)

Yes, it can vary how long before a wash depending on the product the detailer is using…

Some also use UV lamps after coating, so the ceramic bonds quicker than by just letting it cure on the car…

go to the detailer so he/she can see the car and provide quote.
see how they present to you what they are doing for the ceramic process

for ceramics we
  1. prep
  2. wash
  3. decon
  4. clay
  5. light polish/paint correction if needed
  6. prep paint
  7. install ceramic

they should also provide you tips on how to maintain the coating.
