Missing chips, missing wi-fi but fixing with OTA update ?

Can someone please explain how an OTA update can be used to resolve a chip shortage?

I can't vouch for BMW, but I can say in my line of work, chip issues have caused manufactures to change ventors, this can caused the need for new drivers and similar firmware type software re-writes to utilize new vendor chips in old boards, or to do old things with those new chips. Driver/firmware updates are an upload and execute sort of fix. They likely rushed the chips into the cars to facilitate production, and said they would figure out the drivers later and send OTA. It's a good idea really, allows product to be shipped, and later made to work, no need to bring the car back in for parts swapping.

It's better than just sending the car missing chips (and features) as so many other brands have chosen to do.
