Max Verstappen spoke out strongly on Thursday at a press conference at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya about the dismissal of Michael Masi as race director in Formula 1. According to the reigning world champion, the Australian has been "thrown under the bus" by the FIA.

Masi had to step down as a result of the controversial final stage of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in which Verstappen eventually took his first world title at the expense of Lewis Hamilton.

"It's not the right decision," Verstappen pounced. "He had to suddenly take over from Charlie Whiting, who was incredibly experienced. And even he had help around him. Michael might have been able to use that too. But they threw him under the bus."

"I sent him a message after it became known," said the Limburger, who was particularly bothered by the way team bosses like Mercedes' Toto Wolff but also his own Red Bull team boss Christian Horner were able to talk directly to Masi. "It was unfair what happened to him. Imagine a referee on a soccer field constantly having the coaches screaming in his ear."

"That Formula 1 allowed the team bosses to do that to him was already wrong. That way he couldn't make good decisions," Verstappen was clear. "The people who allowed that have now fired him. I find that unbelievable."
Well said Max.

I dont see anything wrong with Max's take. He basically said Masi was set up for failure and didnt get the support he needed and feels bad he was fired because of it. Doesnt change the fact he was gifted the world championship.

When the man that gifted Max a championship got fired, it left Max with a very empty feeling. A feeling that suggest his championship with a huge asterisk next to it may be his last.

Never forget. I'll keep reminding everyone of this and the outrage of the leniency shown to the perpetrator.

Masi did some good and not so good. Too much for one person with no support.

Freitas can be draconian at times, Merc may have created a monster with the Masi debacle.

Look forward to the carnage/whinging/ego hits this season.

Track limits, drive through penalties and VSC are coming.

The situation with Mazepin at the moment is that he remains in F1 but has been excluded from competing at the Silverstone race.

If penalties and such increase, I don't mind as long as they're legit and applied fairly to all drivers and not giving certain drivers the benefit. No one is going to complain. It's when things aren't being called consistently - don't care if it's VER or HAM. Penalty or violation of the rules is what it is, just penalize drivers.

Bump for all the folks who wanted Masi out or thought it was a good idea.

Enjoy eating your delicious crow.

Feel sorry for Masi, believe the FIA failed him in a way. Notwithstanding all the issues, believe Max deserved the championship considering how dominating the Mercedes was prior to the "new era".

Many believe Masi felt the same way.

It's not about driver favoritism though.

Did you see how terribly mismanaged Monaco was? There was no responsibility or communication. Whether Masi was wrong or right, he was always available for talks after the race. Now it's just silence.

I totally agree. That was a mess. As soon as they rolled out under yellow with the SC and the rain came back I knew it was destined to be a disaster. I’m not a fan of how F1 manages their races when bad weather comes in. It’s like they have no plan and no leadership.
