Ridiculous Shipping Costs
anyone else tried to sell things on these forums recently and found how absurd shipping has become? It is almost not worth listing some items these days. I was quoted $90 to ship a spoiler in a box that was less than 5lb.

Yes, shipping is nuts. Especially a UPS store or Fed Ex store.
I have found USPS to be most reasonable until you start getting into large items *Did you know you can ship on Greyhound buses? The buyer has to go to a bus station to pick it up but for large items like bumpers and wheel sets its not a bad idea* |

Dunno, I had something shipped from NZ just recently and it was cheaper and faster than expected. Maybe its the issue with size, my box was a few lbs but only a foot long, Id think a spoiler is pretty long.

a spoiler while not heavy is pretty big, length wise.
that doesn't sound too bad.

Had a brand new set of lowering springs that I sold for $100 less than what they could be bought new and had shipping included. Shipping was $108. Between PayPal fees and shipping...I probably should have just held on to them.
Sucks...but they were taking up space. And, someone will get to use them...

Wish I could have used the corporate account at FedEx when I was working for a former employer for personal items. I was able to ship a 50lb server in the factory shipping box next day air for if I recall correctly for around $30. Former company does a ton of business with FedEx and gets a specific discount against the corporate account number I was issued. No idea what it would be now as those rates were about 5 years ago.

But shipnerd.com seems to get close to those rates for personal items. Shipping costs have definitely gone up a lot in the past year let alone 5.

A few months back I picked up on old license plate for a buddy. He's maybe 45 minutes north, but I was slammed and couldn't get out to him. Screw it, I'll just mail it in a padded envelope.
$25 later... |

I had to ship some medicine to my parents last week. They were out of town and running low. Paid $90 for overnight delivery via. UPS. Package weighed half a quarter pound and fit in a standard envelope. I was like WTF?

Welcome to the world of $6.00 a gallon for diesel. Trucks are not cheap to operate. Shipping is brutal and I can't see Amazon doing 2 day delivery very much longer.

Wifey mails books all the time. In the U.S she can use the Media Mail rate, which is a couple bucks per book. But shipping a single book to Canada usually runs about $25. I don't know who's making the killing off that rate, USPS or the Canadian postal service.

Not to sound like a spam bot but check out Pirate Ship, you can get commercial or better postage pricing without any software, just sign in, print, and drop off, no standing in line.
They offer USPS and UPS to compare options. |

You can also estimate the weight if you don't have a scale, the carriers will confirm the weight and refund or charge as needed.
I confirmed this with a USPS commercial rep years ago and recently seen credits come back into my Pirate Ship account for packages that were lighter than what I entered. |

I needed to ship 4 wheels (no tires) from FL to CA in 2 separate boxes
Each box was 22x22x22 @ 52 lbs $169 each or $338 total with no added insurance was the cheapest I could find (FedEx or UPS) |

As much as we hate it it's been a long time coming. Shipping has been uber cheap for eons. Some of the examples above, like say shipping a number plate for $25, if I said to you there was $25 in a parking lot half an hour away would you do the 1 hr round trip to go get it? Right. People's time costs money.

Or if you're close enough to any of those drop off locations, to bring your package and have them weigh it.

not surprised, costs of fuel has gone up, employees complaining about their wages, so that went up, cost of supplies have gone up, the pandemic shutdown caused a lot of companies to lose money, so now they're playing catch up.
